What I would love would be the ability to logon to windows on any machine by specifying an ftp (or other open and common system that is always synced and accessible) address and a user/pass that would then let me work online. Having it all slimmed down to optimize towards least possible network traffic and as much of it loaded off on the client.
That would be brilliant. Imagine sitting down at a PC anywhere in the world, then choosing between say three bandwidth intensities and then just using everything like you were at home.
Having spreadsheets and word documents open by preference in any online editor if a compatible one isn't installed on the local machine and being able to load your savegames in case you had the same games installed on the local machine.

Edit: And NO I'm not talking of the domain-crap that already exists. I want something that'll let me access my files easily if I'm not using windows or only have a webbrowser available to access my things.

won't happen. Again Dell, HP, and so on offer customizable machines, so it will download and install (just an example of 1 thing) blue tooth drivers which you don't have. Now imagine for the rest of your component. This will make windows boot up slower (more drivers to load) and take more space. And also, how about people that custom build their computers.

Vista system is fine. You install Vista, you go in Windows Update, and it shows you the latest update and drivers that your system needs. Just click on the update button.

    In a different topic.
As we know windows has plug'n Play system, which is very nice, and simplifies everyone life. The problem is that Windows doesn't delete the drivers once you remove a device. I mean it's done on purpose so that next time it's faster to plug-in. The problem is after time, well window stakes time to start up as it has to load all the useless drivers from USB memory sticks that was not yours or peripherals you don't use anymore. What Windows should have is a system where drivers don't need to be re-installed when you use a different USB port, and that if you don't plug back a device after some time it deletes the drivers.

I would say: What Windows needs is to not load drivers until there is a hardware call for them.

they could do the centralized one click driver install, is possible, just need someone to stand up and run with it

I'd rather see the drivers be on flash memory ON the hardware, as a sort of firmware. No worries about finding the right drivers because they come as part of the hardware.

I know this isn't MS problem, but there is no reasomn that every single device needs a 10 MB driver and to have a background process running in the tray.

Faster load up, no UAC, small install and not a system hog. I flipped when I saw how much space Vista 64 used.

    Agreed.

I have disagree. it feels great running a system without Antivirus and spyware protection. System runs like never before, and it is secure. And it can be disabled by the removal of a check on a checkbox, so unlike Linux, you can disable it. So don't complain.

Already is, 20min for Vista, and now 10min install as many features are gone from the setup (can be downloaded, (I think a second DVD with all these apps might be nice, but anyway)), like Movie Maker.

Vista is pretty light, just a bit more over XP, that's all.
Ohhhh... RAM used... again miss information/lack of knowledge at work here. That is Super Fetch, in short, it pre-loads your program system files (ie. .dll's) before you do, on your RAM. This way your most used applications start up significantly faster. This feature can be disabled, but then your applications will stratup at the speed of XP, which ain't cool. Because this system is included in the core of Windows, it can directly without any visual delay free up RAM as your system needs it. So you can just ignore that "used part" of the RAM in the Task Manager. I think Vista is 300-350MB, and that is because it loads the kernel on your RAM, which is awesome.

Used what? HDD space? If so, then that is because you not only have the system files, processes, and program that it comes with in 64-bit, but also in 32-bit. Notice the 2 Program Files, and the 2 system directory (System32 and SysWOW64). This was done so that your applications runs perfectly under Vista 64-bit. So don't complain.

RAM is cheap, and now the standard is or getting really soon to 4GB of RAM, and as for HDD 320GB is getting the standard. All CPU's are multi-core as well. So why not use it. More features, more UI niceness and animation = more resources.

Also keep in mind that 64-bit stuff is larger than 32-bit. My biggest wish for Windows 7 is for it to break less. That's a really general statement, I know, but it's what I'd want. Managing the system files better perhaps, when drivers and system files get corrupt, prompt to replace them. I really don't know how they would cure the problem, but Microsoft is probably making it more stable as they have with their OS's in the past.

    Drivers don't brake by magic.
This is you (or you executing an application) that played a bit too much on your registry.
Or a faulty hardware (where in the case that the product drivers can't be installed, and use the card properly).
Or you confused windows by playing with drivers setups or the device (remove/put back while in use).
Or, the drivers were badly designed in the first place, and anything will cause a BSOD. Windows can't do anything about it. But you can, by not purchasing the company product.

If driver fault occurs and you can't fix it by re-install. you can also take your system to a trip back in time, in Vista. If you get a BSOD, you can load Windows as Load last known good configuration.". If they crash they restart, no BSOD.

on a side note about USB drivers when you plug stuff into different ports..

It's not an MS thing that makes it have to install it twice it's the shitty hardware chips that go into USB devices. GOOD ones have a unique ID that makes it detectable by the pc so it doesn't matter where you plug it in it knows what it is. **** ones don't.. and thus need to have the drivers installed every time.

    I had windows 7 on my laptop a Toshiba a200-1gb for a week... Pre-beta.

No complain whatsoever bout loading time
Good speed, internet is faster and more stable on wireless connections.
Didn't test the readyboost as there where no drivers for it.
Since it is a pre-beta i had to go on with compability issues... I was wating for them ;)
Most of the drivers from vista can be installed on 7 with compabilty mode.
Uac more smarter... Gets a lot out of your way, unlike in vista.
ie8 is better... no firefox dogh...xD
wmp12 is cool but it lacks a now playing screen as it wants do stay on the music library
don't know why but the pre beta has the .net framework all messed up, looks like the new 3.5 version is on testing also. everygame that didn't use .net framework ran and better than in vista! FYK i had the Ati engenyring sample on 7 while on vista i have the latest catalist drivers with the mobility modder tool...

Smaller install Smaller memory usage Better program interface.

Can't wait for the full one...
Back on vista since i want to play Cod4 and 5... And use Autocad for Arquitecthure xD

Sorry for my bad english im portuguese xD

Hope this turns out to be a good OS and i like to see more beta users opinion from now on ;)

    With regards .JT

As I'm shifting entirely to Linux.. my only hope is.. None of my customers EVER use Windows7.
Oh, that and *IT DOESN'T BECOME THE ONLY OS PRE-INSTALLED WITH EVERY DAMNED MACHINE IN THE SHOPS!* (slight exaggeration, as I know a few companies offer Linux pre-installs.. but that only seems to be online ¬_¬)

If it doesn't get worse than the pre-beta builds that've been floating around, then I'll be happy.
