I agree with everyone that Windows 8 requires another step to shutdown the computer. I mentioned this since a while ago. But, is it worth ditching Windows 8 just for that? Come on!

Hey, in Windows XP I can do it in three steps: 1. Click Start menu; 2. Click "Turn off computer"; 3. Click "Turn off".

Obviously Windows 7 didn't improve on this, so why would I bother upgrading? :p

I'm still amused by the fact that aside from all the other things that Windows 8 has improved upon, we're arguing about the number of clicks it takes to shut down. Unless I've missed something, in an era in which self-professed geeks install all manner of applications to monitor CPU and memory loads while processes are running, some opt for what may actually be a less efficient OS because it takes one or two fewer clicks to start a given process.

Ah, I see. I think that under Power Management in the Control Panel you may actually be able to do that, by deselecting all alternative options from the on-screen power menu. I'm guessing; not tried it yet.

you are awfully good at remembering things. Kudos

I'm not against touschscreen interfaces in general. Windows 8 just feels like a hamfisted touch interface has been shohorned on top of windows 7 and the freedom of choice not to use it has been taken away (out of the box anyhow). Many of the changes they made to the UI are needlessly prescriptive and counter intuitive and there is no surprise that a lot of people don't like it.

I dont particulary care about the software shut down button. I just think it should be much easier to find!

p.s. Change for the sake of change does not progress make.

    Greetings!
You could change that on Vista.
Nope. You just need to configure Vista or W7 properly.
Its two clicks. One on Start the other on Shutdown on both Vista and W7, once properly configured.

I must be the only person in the world with a Shutdown button on my keyboard.

heh yes. Even sleep button on keyboard is rare... but I think they'll start to appear.. at least the sleep button, where you can tell Windows to change it to shutdown if you want.

You can change that on Windows 8. You can simply make a Shutdown tile. Heck, you can do one for Shutdown, Hibernate and Sleep each.

About 1cm above F4, not something i've ever accidentally hit tbh. Sleep button to it's right too ^^

Nexxo, while you can add a shutdown tile to Modern, I can see what Impar means. In W7 the shutdown button existed it just defaulted to something else, which could be changed to shutdown. Allowing for a 2 click shutdown.

In W8, no Tile for shutdown exists, there is no option for that. Sure we can create a shutdown shortcut, but then we can argue we could do that on W7 on the desktop. Since I mostly use the desktop in W8, shutdown is 4 clicks, Start Menu, Settings, Power, shutdown. With us having to activate the side menu.

Imo, they should have put your preferred power option, shutdown/sleep/hibernate, on the account icon button on Modern instead of change account picture. With the option to change it to anyone of the three power options. I can imagine the reason they didn't put the power button as a Tile was to stop accidental presses on a touchscreen.

I can't believe we're actually discussing number of clicks to shutdown.... :sigh:

You can invoke the Settings menu from the desktop. No need to go back to the Start Screen.

I suspect that on the next version of Windows the shutdown will indeed move to the account picture.

I lived it --I'm 46 years old after all. :eeek: I witnessed the first ZX Spectrum and VIC 20 coming onto the market. I laid my hands on their keyboards, and I was home for the first time.

This may sound maudlin (and it probably is) but you should have been there. Home computing was so primitive, yet so full of magic and promise and dreams. It opened the door to a whole new universe of imagination made real. Perhaps that's why I'm more forgiving of Windows 8's flaws. I remember a time when things were much more primitive, and yet how they became the springboard for much greater things. This is only the beginning.

@loftie: Windows+I (from anywhere), click Power, click Shutdown. That is one key press and 2 clicks.

    Greetings!
You realise that the above can be read as "W8 back to primitive" and "W8 can only improve"?

My mistake, I've never actually noticed before that the power settings are available from desktop. I'm a victim of my own power button.

What don't you like about it? Is it the start screen? You can know it's fully customizable. Here is mine:

Old picture, I have more games installed, but you get the idea. I get to run my games in 1 click.. no more opening Steam, then go on library, and then click on my game, and then click on play. Click and go.

Not to mention all Windows 8 new feature too.

It can also be read as "W8 will kill a kitten every time you boot up" if you are that way predisposed. What it says is: computing used to be much more primitive. If it wasn't for the radical paradigm changes that regularly came along and were much lamented at the time (people really derided the mouse and GUI), we wouldn't have the computers we have today.

But hey, the iPad got flak too, for "not being a real computer". That worked out OK. Or perhaps you should blame it for Windows 8.

Also interested to know what you don't like, and how long you used it for? :)

From a productivity sense I find it awfully clunky. The UI is awful. Things randomly going full screen and appearing if you drift to close to a corner is very distracting. I don't find it intuitive at all. I thought I could stick with it and it world grow on me but I find it far too frustrating to use.

I couldn't recommend it to anyone to be honest. I know that under the hood that it is an upgrade, but to me it feels like a backward step. I'd hate to install this on my parents machine. They wouldn't have a clue how to use it.

I agree that drifting into a corner can be a bit of a distraction, although I don't really suffer from this issue. To activate the right menu I have to be above the height of the bottom of the close button, and hit the side of the screen. It won't activate for me unless I hit the edge. The left menu I have no issue as I normally have no apps running to activate it.

Not sure what you mean by things going randomly fullscreen. Fullscreen in modern or on the desktop?
