There is nothing arbitrary about it, the default GUI for windows 8 is the start screen.
The problem is that you don't seem to understand the meaning of the word default.
    http://www.thefreedictionary.com/default
And i didn't say anything about attaching the label 'default' to the Start Screen changing its function I simply pointed out that you were incorrect when you said...
Like i said the start screen is not hidden until you summon it, the start screen is the default GUI for windows 8, it is the desktop that is hidden until you summon it.

But if your PC booted up with the Start Menu already open I doubt that this would be a cause for dismay. You might even find it handy because it saves you a step. You are hung up on having to see the desktop, even though it is not the first thing you interact with.

No, I'm hung up on you claiming peoples objections lack logic.
As even after talking about the differences between a full screen start menu being the default GUI, and one the size of a normal icon invoked when needed you still insist on claiming people are hung up on something entirely different.

I think it does lack logic. Your whole objection seems to be based on the difference that the Start Screen is the first thing you see on boot, whereas the Start Menu is the second thing you see?

If the Start Menu is messy with icons, it's messy with icons. It does not matter whether they are the first thing you see on boot, or whether you have to click on the start button first. The functionality of the Start Menu is impaired by the clutter.

The default GUI for Windows is errr Windows. It's all clicking on things with a pointer. That doesn't change whether you're on the Start Screen or the desktop.

So you are saying a start screen with clutter being the default GUI, versus a start menu with clutter that is hidden until you summon it lacks logic ? maybe you should re-read what you just said.

You have stated that you didn't like the start menu and installed RocketDock, but when Microsoft made a full screen version of the start menu you seem to love it, who is it that is lacking logic ?

I smell a dead horse here. Stop beating it. We are nearly at page 200 with default post per page setting. Yes, we understand some of you don't like the start screen. We got it 170 pages ago.

Similarly, Yes, we also understand that some of you don't like us talking about our dislike for the start screen. We got that also 170 pages ago.

Maybe if you stop denying there is problem or even that the problem somehow lies with the user(which btw is hilarious).

    Greetings!
    Missing features:
There is no point to you learning to use StartMenu now. StartScreen will have most of the features in W8.1 that were missing in W8. Just check how handy they are and what you have missed.
Tried for more than 5 minutes. Missing features were still missing.
No. It would cost one more step to close it. I go straight to shortcuts on Taskbar, not on StartMenu (or StartScreen).
The "Boot to Desktop" option in W8.1 is late almost two years.
    Metro doesnt have windows.

You don't have to 'close' the Start Screen; when you click an icon the the program launches and the Start Screen goes away.

If it's so vital to your productivity to get all the necessary programs up and running as soon as humanly possible, wouldn't it be better to create a script to automatically launch them all upon startup?

    Sure.

    Start Screen
Something to keep in mind. That Windows 8 Start Screen default layout sucks.
Just unpin or uninstall the programs you don't need or think you won't need. You can do this, by simply right-click on them, and you'll have the options at the bottom.

Then you pin all your games, programs, and folders that you want and group things. Here is my (really old picture, but still the same more or less today (basically more games)

Basically you want to pin the most used programs on your task bar, like in Windows 7. And you most accessed items on the Start Screen at the bottom left corner of the screen where the Start hot corner is. In my case, I put folders I access a lot.

To make groups, click at the bottom right most button on the scroll bar to zoom out, and right-click on the groups you made and set a name.

    Default programs
If you choose to keep some Modern UI apps that can open files, like picture, or Reader (PDF reader), once you install your desktop program, go open Default Programs (Start > type: default programs > Select: Default Programs), then click on Set your default program, and go through the list to assign of program you want to make it as the default program to open. If you decide to remove the modern UI apps that affects, then you don't need to do this.
It must be noted that this entire step is optional, as in reality Windows will prompt you with a notification informing you that another program (desktop program) can view this file.

    Modern UI Apps
Alt+F4 to close them, or position the mouse at the center top, and drop it all the way down.

You can move the Modern UI app on the side, and get split view

XBox Music is awesome, you can listen to music for free (with ads), or get unlimited access + download no ads for 10$ per month, or 100$ per year (U.S prices, see them for your region).
In my opinion worth it. XBox Music iOS and Android app are out so that you can use it there.

    Misc
    - Don't forget to install Windows Essentials much like you did with Windows 7 if you care.
    - Windows 8 comes with Security Essentials built-in (called Windows defender.. not to be confused with Windows defender in Windows Vista and 7, which are the same)
    - If your system is fully UEFI ready, set it up before installing Windows 8 (clean install required)
    - Don't forget to set your SATA Controller to AHCI if it's not, in the BIOS
    - If you wonder how you can shutdown/restart/sleep your computer. Do Win+I anywhere you are, and you'll see the power button.

I think that should help you get started a bit.
If you need any help, just ask.

Expect about 1 month (average based on user feedback) of usage as a main system, daily, to get pass the learning curve of Windows 8, and be comfortable with it.

It does, and then I have to move the mouse to the shortcuts in the Taskbar to start the rest of the programs. Its easier to just go directly to Desktop, place mouse over the shortcuts on the TaskBar and hit them in succession.

Similarly how you do Aero Snap in Windows 7.
You position the mouse to the top center, and your drag down a bit, then you Move left or right.
Then click on the empty space (or go to the Start Screen), pick another app.

that's what I tried, didn't work tho and found out that the feature is disabled due to my resolution which sucks considering im on a 43inch screen.

Also do you know of any good adblockers for the metro version of IE? I tried installing adblockplus but it didn't do nothing.

So far im enjoying windows 8, I like that I can right click in the bottom left corner, find that pretty handy.

I do find the lack of a right click menu strange in metro apps, it seems more cumbersome having to move the mouse to the bottom of the screen for the menu instead of having a menu pop up next to the pointer.
