    Windows XP = Windows 8
    Windows XP + SP1 = Windows 8.1

    See what I mean?

    No. Windows 8.1 is not a service pack.

    8.1 is a 'different' OS technically with 6.3.XXXX where 8 was 6.2.XXXX. Much in the same way as different OSX versions are considered to be a different OS.

    i haven't upgraded my vanilla 8 install to 8.1 yet. And I'm not sure why that is currently...

    I keep telling it to go away when it pops up telling me to upgrade.

    I think it's mainly as my work machine is windows 7, my home machine is windows 8, I'm generally on my home machine to be gaming or doing something fun and generally speaking I can't be bothered doing a long upgrade during this time. It's not due to being "unwilling" - as I am willing, just pressed for time :)

    As i said above it's more like [imo]

    8 = 98
    8.1 = 98SE

    However i think the 'feature pack' is to 8.1 what SP2 was to XP...

    Just to complicate matters, remember Windows 95 vs. Windows 95 + IE4.0? The name would suggest just a new web browser, but it was a total OS overhaul.

    It's not hard to get hold of Windows 7 at all. The NHS alone has been stockpiling Windows 7 licences for about the last 7 years with every Dell PC it bought and then re-installed Windows XP on, as this was until termination of its support the OS du jour. Now it must upgrade it is simply dusting off all those Win7 licences and activating them.

    You don't even need to do that. Where I work as IT, we run on Windows 7 (we follow a 6 year upgrade cycle), we can order Windows 7 licenses from Microsoft. We have Windows Volume License with Microsoft. Our office computers runs on Windows 8.1, however.

    I think when they said "It might be hard to get hold of Windows 7 these days" they were implying that you supposedly can't buy consumer PCs with it pre-installed anymore.

    Whoops scratch what i said about consumer PCs with it pre-installed, it was going to be October this year but they changed their mind, i should have said retail software end of sales. And before you pick holes in that to ;) retail does not include OEM copies.

    Can't say i ever needed or wanted a start menu in Windows 8/8.1, this news that's it's reincarnation has been put back bothers me little.

    I could care less if they ever brought back a small start menu. It's useless anyway.
    But... I suppose the conversation went something like: Software people - hey it seems a lot of people are stuck in thier old ways and refuse to accept change. We can bring back some version of the start menu... [a few months later] Alright all the code is done and it works. I think we can put it out as a free feature in update 2. Marketing people - NO! You can't do that. We need that as an bullet point to sell copies of Windows 9! Accounting people - we agree with marketing, feature delayed!

    I always assumed it was a shortened form of "As if I could care less" instead of the british "I couldn't care less". But yea, it's weird :p
