Well they took their time but finally there is an official way to create install media for 8.1

Create installation media for Windows 8.1
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media
Direct link to the Media creation tool.

Didn't that happen last month, or am i think of the combined stats for 8.x
I know one of the bean counters adjusted there stats last month because of something to do with Chinese companies skewing the stats for XP over the last few years.

It was announced this week, but it may well be old news. I wonder if the impending Windows 10 has something to do with it --after all rumours have it that it will be a free upgrade for Windows 8.X users...

About bloody time too, though I'll still use MPCHC, not used VLC for ages. Hopefully this'll go over to WP8 too.

MKV is a very flexible container format that can actually contain almost any video and audio codec. Adding MKV support doesn't mean it will be able to play back most MKV files as MPC-MC/VLC typically can.

Even if WMP did match MPC-MC/VLC's ability to playback anything you throw at it, I'd still mostly use MPC-HC. I use it as much for it's power, features and flexibility as file support.

Link doesn't work for me. I actually use KCP, which installs MPCHC as it's choice, although there is an alpha version using MPCBE. I shall look into it, ta :)

    edit: works now!

I'm really late to the party, & finally on 8.1. I can honestly say it doesn't bother me in the slightest. If anything, it is slightly better than 7 in a few ways so far. Right clicking on the start button makes most tasks I might undertake a lot faster. Powershell from the explorer as an option by default. Pretty happy so far.

    8.1 [w/ 'update 1'] is much improved on 8 [and stock 8.1]

The changes between 8 as it was released and 8.1 as it is now individually seem minor, but they add up to a more 'finished' feeling product, had 8 been like this from day one... people would've still bitched, sure, but imo it wouldn't have provoked as strong a backlash...
