Well, installed it in a VM and even though it runs nicely (especially after installing VMware Tools) I'm even more put off by Metro than initially anticipated. It's bloody useless on the desktop! Also, the way Metro's integrated (everything seems to have to go through it) seems to cement my initial suspicion and worst fears that the usual Windows desktop is merely an add-on. For us oldsters, who hopefully die out before too long.

One thought on the Metro start screen. Why haven't they implemented scrolling around it with the mouse a bit more "touch-like"? Right now you have to use a scrollbar at the bottom. I'd like to see it implemented more like "press mouse button, move mouse in a certain direction with a certain acceleration, release mouse button". I'm sure you get the general idea. I believe it's referred to as "mouse dodging"?

You can use the mouse scroll wheel (up and down).. Sadly Left/Right scrolling isn't support at the moment (or ever).

I just showed it to my dad... The first thing he did was to touch the screen:duh:. It looks like it would be great on a tablet, but they need to sort out mouse functionality too - as it stands, the traditional desktop seems to be horribly marginalised.

He seems a smart man. Correctly identified what is a touch interface. ;)

Ok so I have a crappy Intel Atom processor in my Acer Revo 3610 that doesn't support virtual machines (used the MS tool to work this out).

Can I just install this over Windows 7? Win7 is painfully slow on this thing and I hardly use it so if it goes wrong then that isn''t too much of an issue for me.

I don't have a DVD drive to make a back up disk sadly.

If you have enough hard drive space, try this, it's what i did [after I tried the VM] and it works ok so far...

I fail to see the problem... sell on itunes, you have to pay apple a cut... same on steam, Xbox LIVE marketplace and whatnot, why would Microsoft's 'App Store' be any different?

I think the small issue I have is that with OSX, because of the nature of the OS you can still choose to distribute or install apps the traditional way (akin to Android's sideloading option), whereas Windows 8 Metro apps will only be available through the app store.

No-one is forcing developers to put their wares on the app store [at the very least, nowhere does the article state that Metro apps *have* to be sold through the app-store or can't be free]

Who said it was a problem?
Are you planning on buying Metro apps?

If possible, will just keep using my usual freeware programs in Windows.

Hm, that is a new one then. Well, still not a problem in my eyes. You don't have to create Metro apps :).

It's a good thing Windows 7 is actually quite a good OS - I have no intention of 'upgrading' to Metro until that stupid touch interface is made entirely optional.

Huh. IE metro is killable by making another browser the defaults for the HTTP and HTTPS protocols. It doesn't work unless it's the default. :D
