AFAIK, the default power mode for most new PCs is one where after 15 minutes, they shut off the monitor, and after a half hour or so, they put the PC into a sleep or hibernate state where everything is turned off, but it can boot back up in a few seconds by hitting the power switch or tapping the keyboard.

I've heard that Apple products are pretty much the same way - a 30-45 second initial boot-up, but then every time you turn it off after that it goes right into a very low power hibernate, which allows for instant-on.

Frankly, all Windows needs to do is rename hibernate as "shut down", and it will be the same thing as Macs. Then just leave a complete shutdown as another option.

Hmmm, mine is German, so the Power states are called differently.

I have "Standby", which powers up in a few seconds, and "Ruhezustand" ...probably a "Hibernate". Where I can see a "resuming windows" bar that takes about half a minute.
Then again, the thing is fully encrypted so that probably slows it down.

The main difference is when you turn the power off (at the wall).
Hibernate, accepts no power, Standby doesn't.
