Hi, I've just had a clean up of my primary drive to improve performance and noticed that one of the folders on it will not delete.

The message in the dialog box after right clicking and delete says: Could not find this item, Verify the item's location and try again.

I think maybe the registry entry for this folder has somehow been deleted, although not sure. Any ideas how to get this folder deleted?

    Thanks.

Thanks for replies. A couple of issues have surfaced in windows recently including windows aero randomly swithching to basic, so I decided it was time for a clean install. Got straight on with it this morning and couple of hours later have a healthy new system, with my most used apps installed and ready to go.

Dreading reinstalling games (might just do it as I want to play them, couple hundred gigs worth between steam and physical disks).

When I can't delete a folder or a file, I boot on a CD called sysrescue. It's a linux live CD and it works well (as long as you don't try to use the interface... which never worked for me). Of course if you don't know how to mount a partition in linux it'll be a pain in the ass to do, but if you can, it's a quick solution to a dumb problem

Probably a bad time to mention it, but you may have backups so:

If you copy your "steamapps" folder from the Steam Program files, containing all your up-to date steam games, you can paste it in again after you install steam on your clean install, saving you from having to install them all again. So all you have to actually install is Steam. Worked for me, and there is a page detailing it on the Steam support site, somewhere :)

I'll repeat what I usually say; you don't need to reinstall Steam at all. Just open the execute and it'll reinstall the services and be ready to go. The only thing that needs to be done before formatting is copying all your saved games (from various locations..what a pain) because Steam won't save them

    :)

or the new Windows 7 optimization tool set has the new version of ERD commander with loads of great tools including locksmith and you can mount the parrtitions and delete contents

Anything pre-Vista Straight ERD Commandar should work

Although its like the old saying "horse and bolted" but once you have a rig with operating sys and usual programs / games then I normally Acronis my boot drive. This basically is a snapshot of your hard drive from that point in time. any nasty viruses or errors then you can just re images it in 5 minutes without the trauma of reinstalling / configuring everything:)

Also the new Acronis now supports USB2 so only takes minutes to restore.

Hi, some great info. I had the opportunity to save the steam folder as it was on my secondary install/storage drive but wanted to have it fresh installed just for knowing its fresh (I'm funny like that). Had already saved all the save games, only took a few mins anyway.

I've created an image of the new install. Wasn't possible before as there were a few things I wasn't happy with already on the system, so creating an image would have retained these issues on the image.

I never gave it a thought to boot into my live ubuntu disk or something similar to try to delete the problem folder - never mind, a fresh install was on the cards sooner or later.

Loving the fact that I don't have to get on the blower to Microsoft everytime I reinstall from the Win 7 disk and jabbing in a ridiculous amount of codes just to activate - the way it should have been from the start.
