I have an old WHS build on the original WHS1 (Server 2003) edition. I wasn't tempted by the updated version but now we have Storage spaces and other relevant stuff in WSE 2012.

Is anyone else looking at a build on this platform? I see a lot here and the big immediate question is whether to use a domain or not. It's a pretty major issue for me as I'm not always at home and I'm concerned about what happens if the server falls over.

Then there's the hardware question. I have a spare Xeon E3-1285V2 and could buy C202 or C204 board and do it properly, or use and old Core2 and desktop hardware. I have plenty of 1.5TB disks that can be migrated from the WHS rig.

    Hi Risky,

I have been doing some research around this as I plan to be rebuilding my media server over xmas. I read somewhere that you can actually install the connector /client software on a machine without adding it to the domain. I will try and find the link, was a simple regedit on the client from what I remember.

As for storage spaces, I havent got my head round it yet, to me it just looks like sotware RAID.

The E3 will probably use (a lot) less power than the old Core 2. My E3-1235, 24GB RAM, P8B WS, 11 hard drives, TV card etc is idling at 100W(+/-5W). With Core 2, best i managed with a HD5870 and 1 drive was around 150W.

I think the biggest issue is the pricing of WS2012 - $501 for Essentials or $882 for Standard is just insanely expensive compared to WHS2011 for up to 50€.

Yeah the cost makes it really unattractive to use at home.
