I think Wonka meant what are you going to play on if your pc is used as server ;)

He seems to be running it, so I doubt that he would have any time to play...

Boswell, Im aware its an operating system and not a networking program. But it is a server related program and servers only work via a network hence posting in the network section.

As for the 256mb 1600xp, Im taking it thats a graphics card??? Don't undertand how that makes it high or low spec server when a servers graffics card has nothing to do with its bandwidth or have I got you all wrong??

Willwonka - BF2 and battlefield 2142 when it gets here.

Sorry, just read page 2. Yeah Mr wonka, I don't think Ill have much time to play running the LAN.
My lass has a shuttleshe will be bringing so that will do nicely.

Anyhow, you'll all be pleased to know I have now bought a designated server as well as the order I made this morning.

    I have bought the following

    CPU - AMD 3500
    Mobo - Asus A8V
    RAM - corsair value 4 x 512MB ram
a naff DVD rom and a £5 2mb PCI grafffics card of Ebay
    19" rackmount case
1 x Raptor HD. Canceled otherone after advice given here.

    "256mb 1600xp"
I think he means 256MB ram, AMD Athlon 1600XP
    ---
If I were you, I would buy a low end PC for the server and spend the money on your personal rig.

He means an AMD Athlon XP 1600 ;) and the 256 is how much RAM the PC packs ;)

EDIT: Damn, got beaten to it ;)

He was saying 256MB of RAM and a AMD Athlon XP 1600 processor.

EDIT: Guess it's a general agreement, being as 3 people posted at once.

    Mickey123...

I think this will interest you ;) [30 second googling...]

So you are on the good side ;)

And if you go the dedicated server way, don't throw Windows on it, go Linux! There are plenty of guides around... and tbh, it's easy as hell... (hint: look here or here... and there are plenty more)

If you're using it as your gaming rig I can understand why you didn't skimp too much on RAM and CPU, but I hope you like slide shows if you only got a "£5 2mb PCI grafffics card of Ebay"!!!

Infact, you'd be lucky to get past the first 'slide' with that thing!

Read more carefully, that is everything for his dedicated server.

2mb is intensly overpowered for a Command Line Environement ;) like a Linux server ;) But a server (like Windows 2000/2003 - 2D applications) will run just fine on that...

    EDIT: DANG, beat again... :s

So, how exactly are you going to be able to play BF2 on a 2mb PCI graphics card since you have said that this comptuer will double up as a gaming rig?

    Hi glider,
I did see the recommended specs for the servers, I think Casey kindly PM'd me them a week ago or so.
To be fair, 30 seconds of googling don't fill me with the confidence I need to shell out the last £500 of my savings.
I need reasurence from you fellas here in the know. I need to be extra sure Im buying the right kit.

Thanks for the links re linux. I may well give it a try but you do know leading me to such options will amount to 900+ awkward questions here in a few weeks time;]

Eek - This morning I decided to upgrade my PC to use as my server. Since then Ive decided I like the fact of having a new upgraded PC and so bought a dedicated server as well later. Think thats how your confused re GPU

Well, thats my savings gone for good:/ Will be worth it though

No no no no. He is no longer going to double up his computer. He bought all the parts for a dedicated server.

    :duh:
You're right, I didn't read it properly lol!

Last thing I read was that his machine was going to be for gaming and then a server once a month at LANs then a skipped a bit and read what he bought.

I'm going to blame my stupidity on two things:
    1) My head hurts after revising for my exam on Monday
    2) Rereading this 20x to see if it really said what I thought it did: "Boswell, Im aware its an operating system and not a networking program. But it is a server related program and servers only work via a network hence posting in the network section."

    I'll get myself a taxi...

edit: wow, so many posts occured while I was busy replying! Doh!

Quite the opposite :) You posted that you aren't going to be doubling up the server after I posted my post. :)

It's ok, your help is probably much appreciated and it seems that I am the only one here who has yet to get confused about what is going on.
