    OK - to summerise

This morning I bought some extras to make my home rig into a rig that could double up as a server.

Since talking to most, they all think a dedicated server is better for a professional venture such as a LAN party.

    Sooooo,

I also bought a dedicated rackmount server. Well, I say also, Ther is only ONE server and thats the rack mount. The other is now just my old gaming rig, improved and now a better gaming rig.

Hey, it was a great way to accidently get pemission of the accountant [wife] to allow upgrading of my rig;]

    OK, now is everyone up to speed??;}

New bits for home rig initially bought to help turn it into a temp server

    Black cube case
    Seasonic 600w PSU
    Asus A8N SLI Mobo
[Raptor moved to 19" rack bellow]

    19” rack

    AMD 3500 CPU
    Asus A8V Mobo
    corsair value 4 x 512MB ram
a naff DVD rom and a £5 2mb PCI grafffics card of Ebay
    19" rackmount case
    1 x Raptor HD 36GB
    Seasonic 430 PSU

    Still to purchase

    D-link gigabit 24 port switch

No - If you say so Boswell I beleive you, why would you lie.

Ive gone with slightly better than than EAs recommended specs just some security on my cash outlay.

TBF the price of midrange PC parts nowerdays such as AMD3500 is only £50 more than something far less. Again, RAM is £50 a gig.
I pobs would of saved £100 out of the £500 I spent on the 19" server by installing lesser components.

As well as casual LANs I am going to host a regular event too. Whilst it won't be profit making it will have to break evens, and so a fee will have to be charged.

Paying gamers and lag don't mix. BF2 is so power hungry [Ive heard through EAs crap coding but can't confirm as I no nowt about this]

Also I want to be able to run BF2s successor BF 2142. Well, a year after it's release when EA finally release a patch to make it stable, but thats another thread:]

Those were excellent specs for 20 peeps on a 64 plr map. What were you playing out of interest?

woah, this thread is confusing. I think that willywonka did not read the post about Mickey setting up a dedicated server after Mickey edited it and said that he was going to buy a dedicated server.
LOL, hope this clears up some confusion.
