Ok, so idownload the windows SP2 from the automatic thing on the MS Website, however, i dont have enough hard drive space on ym main drive to install the huge, way oversized ******* (even though i have like 500mb!). So...

I was wondering if anybody knew where windows update stores the install files so i can copy them to another drive and install it from there! That way i can free up the space taken by the installation files!

    Thanks :)

Doesn't really work like that, dude - you need 1.6-2Gb of free space on your OS drive for install.

And I'd recommend downloading the full install from www.microsoft.com/downloads - the one for IT Professionals and Developers.

Do you know if the download option is the only officially supported way to get the SP?

I know that some updates have been made available before through ordering (free) CDs etc. Obvisouly the size would mean DVD, but a 1.6Gb download on 56k "aint a pleasing thought!"

MS says the best way to get it is through windowsupdate.com

1.6GB download? Nope. 270MB more like.

    because its highly compressed
it uncompresses, then backs up your current windows dir then copies new files over

Indeed. When you install it you'll see that it replaces sooooooo many files!

A lot of the PC comics have SP2 CDs stuck to the front this month.

but without knowing where to delete the CURRENT files from i am very stuck for space. I could download it myself to another partition and install itfrom there, but its no good unless i can clean up lots of space on the C:\

Why must everything need backing up these days. Its just annoying.

I have a hidden folder on one of my partitions called msdownld.tmp which I assume is where it temporarily stores the downloaded update files, I also have an unhidden folder called WUTemp which I guess stands for Windows Update Temporary. However both of these folders are empty on my system.

When I started to insall the 270mb download, it extract all the files it needed to a random folder on the C: drive which is deleted when the install is complete. I doubt there's any way of changing this behaviour... Just out of interest how big is your system partition?

It's a 236MB (ish) download for the full thing. For most PCs, the windowsupdate version is only ~70-80MB.

You can have SP2 extract files to a different place I think. Download the full thing, and run it with start->run with /integrate as a switch. Or /? maybe (don't remember), and it should give a dialog box that explains all the switches so you can have it extract elsewhere.

its 3.4gig, but usually i have a good deal of HD Space free. I oviously didnt count for some stupidly sized update! grrr.

As for backing things up, i have done as much as i can. Moved it all over to my other drives, deleted some game demos, some programs. Theres not music/games or ANYTHING that isnt needed on there, and WU still wants more. Its so annoying. I never back anything up windows related. TBH I wish it gave me the choice!

edit: I think i have found it in C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\6ca7b3a8efd5a9b6f87fff395a2eb989

    :)

edit2: So i managed to install it, i copyed the files to another drive and installed from there... You know how much space it took up ? about 80mb. All that inconvenience for 80mb. Damn you microsoft!

Not only is it hella compressed, but it makes backups of all the files it replaces..

Anyone else notice you cannot opt to not make backups (maybe with command line update /?).. Wondering if MS was expecting problems or just people proofing..

Here a solution for you. There is a free download from here . In the left pane, scroll down to windows service packs. It should be the first one under the heading. It is 272 megs to download, sorry to those who have 56K. You can save it to another drive because it's an executable and it will automatically install to the windows drive no matter which one you put it on.
