My in-laws PC is playing up and I believe that it's possibly Windows updates that are failing. It started about a month ago where after clicking 'Update and Shut Down' the next time they started the PC it reached a blank screen with a cursor but no amount of waiting would get it to the log in screen. I tried rolling back to the last system restore point before the update but that did nothing so I reinstalled windows and got everything back up and running for them. A couple of days ago the exact same thing has happened. Last time I couldn't see anything amiss with hardware and I don't know what could be going wrong with hardware to cause this. The only thing think of is that it's user error- they assure me that they're only clicking update and shut down and not then doing anything stupid like switching off the power at the wall mid update or anything like that. The father in law is getting impatient and talking about getting a new pc but this one is only a few years old - I'd rather he didn't have to splash out on something unnecessary (even though they can afford it). If it helps it was bought from pc specialist and has an i3 skylake (I think), 500gb SSD, 8gb ram, decent enough Corsair psu.
