That's great, we don't need to keep on seeing the same video over and over again in these forums.
As usual I shall refute this, DWM in Vista is just as powerful as Beryl in Ubuntu. Where you get plugins in Beryl you get XAML in Vista (like CoreAnimation on a Mac).

Ask yourself this. Which is the most useable?

end of the day it's just an accelerated windowing API. you can pretty much do everything in either. it's neat, but it's sorta meh now.

Aero, Beryl, Compiz,... All look nice, but I'd rather have a window open in a snap, then watch the funky animations... Fluxbox f t w ;)

It's pretty sad how you define OS by its visuals. But like Glider says, what do you really need on daily bases?

Beryl is nice.. Very nice. And taxing on GFX hardware due to the 3d enviroment. But it uses almost no ram which is a plus. As Glider says. It has the OOH effect on most people that see it. Which is why i love to play with it on top of XFCE, which is still lightweight compared to Vista, KDE and Gnome.

Beryl with most of the plugins uses about 5mb of RAM. But with all that tacky crap turned on the ram usage shoots up.

its more important to look for the features and stability of the OS rather than its graphix work..one wud rather get bored looking to the same effects everyday..i dont like vista as it demads very high resources..gotta try beryl.

Beryl really is quite nice, as is Ubuntu (as much as linux zealots feel a little stripped down by its built-in functionality, it IS still full-featured Linux). However, at the end of the day it REALLY depends what you use your system for. Each OS has its high (and low) lights.

If you want the newest hardware and the games to match along with plug-and-play ease of use, it's Windows whether you like it or not. Linux drivers are just too "back-burner," it takes too long for them to catch up. If you want stability, flexibility and the opportunity to really explore your computer, it's linux all the way. Of course, if you need something to work on...I have found that Mac OSX is my chosen work OS for a multitude of reasons, and will probably never enjoy doing real work on a windows machine again. It's just too tightly integrated, too well built.

Like I said, it all depends on what you need it for. I have the luxury of a lot of hardware thanks to bit-tech so I have several machines that run all three OSs in different capacities. I'm the guy who has started getting Ken to write linux guides for the site, but I didn't do it just to crap on Windows - I did it to show that no matter what you're used to, another OS can have a place in your home too. You don't have to be a convert to like linux, you just have to learn where it's better than windows and where it isn't. :D

Eyecandy is great, but I don't think that comparing Vista with Beryl is valid.

Beryl is a tour the force. It is an OS lovingly programmed by geeks who wanted to stretch possibilities to the limit. It is great fun if you know how to use it; it is an OS by geeks, for geeks.

However most people that use a PC on a daily basis (not guys like us, I mean ordinary people) get confused when there are more than two windows on the desktop. A spinning cube with six desktops and multiple windows? Please. We're talking about people who can't read a roadmap without getting lost. Many people do not have the visuospatial mental map to interpret and keep track of spinning desktops. They'll throw up as soon as they hit the task switcher.

Vista, for all its eyeandy, is conservative. You know it, I know it. The guys who made this video are pointing out the obvious. Vista is conservative for a reason. Vista is not an OS by geeks, for geeks. It is an OS by a commercial company, for an ordinary, PC-illiterate crowd. People who get confused programming their VCR to record Days of Our Lives or Emmerdale. People who want their PC to work like a toaster. Microsoft will include some eyecandy to justify shelling out 300 quid for a new OS (can't have people defecting to Apple, which does work like a toaster), because people simply don't understand why Vista is better than XP on a technical level. But the eyecandy can't get in the way of ordinary people using their PC ordinarily.

Open the Window(s) and see the world beyond. Windows is great at doing what it says it does... Bringing computing to "Average Joe", but for some this is quite constricting... That's where Linux pops in. Linux is about choice.

You don't want something, you leave it out. You want something new, chances are it is allready built, if not, mentioning it at the right place will get it built. And if you are like me, don't have time for gaming, and money for cutting edge HW, Linux can be so much more then Windows pretends to be...

I'll redirect my girlfriend to you for stealing away all my free time ;)

beryl is fun for impressing my little brother with "jiggly windows". other than that the only useful feature is the expose-clone. and everybody i know that's seen my vista desktop has complained that the open-close animations on the windows are just annoying. at the end of the day, the only thing that matters is the speed. this is why i love my xubuntu.

Had this discussion with a mate last night because he wanted to know what was different apart from the fancy GUI and some of the cool lil features, so I just said whilst it doesn't look hugely different (i mean it is still windows, you can't change the users mental model over night) it is what is under the hood that makes the difference, especially on 64-bit.

Yet to install the 64-bit varient though because C&C3 won't work on it, I think game developers should be pushing to make compatibility with DX10 and 64-bit unanimous but thats just me I think.

EDIT: just watched the video, beryl looks pretty! :D I might put that on my old rig to play around with, I've never used linux before so maybe it is a good place to start?

But back to the argument/discussion, yeh windows hasn't got the multiple desktop rotation thing or some of the other aspects BUT it has got everything "joe bloggs" needs, and tbh, HP and Ultimate have pretty much everything we all need. I don't think you can knock Vista for its GUI or windows animations, its cool, slick and nice to look at, AND stable :)
