I'm slowly overcoming hurdle after hurdle... Does anyone know why my PC might not recognise the windows xp disc? I have set up my PC but I keep getting an error asking me to put in a boot disc. Even though I have put one in. Any suggestions?
Does the BIOS recognise the optical drive (CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive) you're using the windows disk in? Have you set up the boot device priority within the BIOS so that its set to boot from that drive? Sorry if I'm teaching you to suck eggs but these are the first things I'd be double checking!
Yes the bios recognises the DVD drive. I have set the boot priority to boot from disc. I have got two disc drives neither of them read the disc, yet when trying the disc in a different computer it works fine. So I doubt it is the disc. If I set up a hdd with an old version of windows on it tries to boot windows and obviously fails. Any other ideas?
That would seem like a problem to me, that two other drives fail to read it. If you can, take the drive that can read it and temporarily install it into the PC you're trying to get windows on. Once the install is completed you can put your DVD drive back in. If you can't take the drive from the other PC, would you be able to burn a copy of your XP disk? That way you would be sure there are little to no scratches on it.
Are you sure it's not a master/slave jumper conflict ? take the jumpers on the back of your drives, this makes it cable select. Hope this helps -Fr4nk
Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media is the error message I get. I know there are a lot of people on the internet who get the same error, but I am getting it withough having windows already installed!
I would suggest the following: Disable all SATA in the BIOS. As you are not using it, it is uneccessary. Check the jumper settings on both the HDD and the DVD are set to Master - Single Drive - or cable select. Plug one HDD in to the Primary IDE Channel (This will probably have a blue connector on the mo/bo and a blue connector on the cable... if you have a monochrome cable this might be your problem!!) Then plug the DVD drive into the Secondary IDE Channel. Just this config for now, with no other devices plugged in. Now go into BIOS and check that all IDE channels are set to Auto Detect and that the boot order is set to DVD first and HDD second. IF this doesn't work, post again with the results and we can go from there.
Problem solved! The boot disc I was using wasn't an original copy. It in fact wasn't capable of booting windows at all. I have borrowed a friends version of windows and its formatting the hard drive as we speak. Hopefully a spanky new PC in a couple of hours! Whats the disadvantages of windows home edition?
Why would it? It isn't about the cd you use... It's about the key. You can use any cd to install software, you just have to use the key you own the licence to.
i had the same problem on my new motherboard when i got it, was solved by updating to the newest bios... was something to do with how the bootable portion of an XP cd is setup that wasn't being recognized by the system for some reason...
