    Unlike Vista, WinXP doesn't really like SATA drive.
    You need to install your SATA drivers. Depending on the SATA controller.
    If you put a SATA HDD one day, you need to get a floppy drive, and SATA drivers onto a floppy, as you need to install them BEFORE Windows installs. If you do it after, your computer will act up with message that say "corrupted data" or "Invalid Win32 Application" on random when you try to run stuff, but sometimes it magically re-works. Well that effect depends on the SATA controller, some you have no problem and you can installed them after Windows is installed.

    You need to look in the manual of your motherboard to find out what the sata chipset is. Then do a bit of searching around to find the appropriate driver.

    Are the sata connectors different colours? If they are, what happens when you plug the liteon drive into a different coloured sata port?

    You don't have any SATA ports on your motherboard i presume...

    Use the SATA-IDE bridge as IDE Primary.

    Then go into BIOS and make sure HDD boots first.

    Good luck.

    Could we please stop spreading that nonsense? Modern BIOS configurations have ensured that hasn't been a problem for about five years unless you're installing to an actual RAID array (in which case you need RAID drivers regardless).

    In any case, generally those PATA/SATA converters are meant to go the other way (ie, SATA mobo to PATA drive). Doing it how you have it set up might be giving unexpected results, especially due to SATA ports being one-channel only and it doesn't really know how to deal with the PATA master/slave settings. If the converter IS meant to be used the way you have it, I'd check to see if you can set it to cable select mode or something like that.

    Hmm.. well, I think iirc on my 'ancient' Asus P5B Deluxe, I always had to reinstall the sata drivers for the additional sata ports (6 were native and the other 2 worked off a J-Micron chip) in XP (and Vista) and that board is well under 5 years old.

    @Firehed, but it is true!
    I happens to me with my ASUS A7N8X *Deluxe* (Nforce 2), running Windows XP pre-SP1, and with my new computer with the ASUS A8N32-SLI *Deluxe* (Nforce 4 SLI), with also Windows XP pre-SP1. Maybe it was fixed on newer Windows XP CD build. I don't know.. but it occurs ALL THE TIME.

    I contact ASUS and Nvidia, and they both told me the SAME thing, RAID or no RAID you have to install the SATA drivers on certain SP versions of Windows XP.

    With my usual basic computer setup, I inatlled Vista, and the issue was solved. For 1 Vista supports driver installation using your optical drive and 2 I didn't even need it. It just worked.

    It occurs all the time because your installing SATA with XP PRE-SP1 !!!!!!!!!!!

    SP1 & SP2 contains the required SATA drivers, therefore you DONT need to install drivers from a floppy. This is also the case if installing XP from a fresh on a new drive. As long as your copy of XP is XP+SP1 of XP+SP2 then you probably wont need any drivers off a floppy.

    Finally - someone with a bit of sense.

    Anyway - read Lynsols problem again. He is using a IDE (mobo) to SATA (drive) converter there for XP doesn't need SATA drivers as the SATA interface is being converted into IDE.

    @lynsol
    It would seem that XP doesn't like your IDE to SATA converter. I've used these in the past & have had nothing but problems with them. Does your mobo not contain any SATA ports at all?
