OK seeing as my gig ram is redundant, another question: if I exported my registry in win ME, could I import it into win2k to save me reinstalling?

    I mean, could I:

make a backup of my registry
copy the contents of my HD to another HD
    wipe my HD
    install win2000
    replace my regisrty
    copy my contents back?

Nope, it woulnt work like that, and it if did it would leave you with a realy bad nstall but it most lily wont work beuase you are replacing a registry from another OS. You'll have to completly re-install, and dont even thing about trying an upgrade install, win9x into 2k jsut dosnet work.

What Gecko says is completely correct. The registry format in Win ME is not compatible with the registry format in Windows 2000. Microsoft totally changed the way that registry data was stored with NT.

Have a look here for more information on it:

Sorry man, just like any clean install, of which I have done hundreds, you have to start from nothing. Also, Windows ME and 2K having different file systems would make it impossible for you to import another registry from a different OS. Bottom line, not possible.

If the Win 9x to W2k upgrade won't work for you then you'll have to do a clean install. It's possible to upgrade 9x to W2k, so you might wanna give it a try before going for a clean install.

Hex is right that the registry design is changed significantly from Win 9x to W2k; an upgrade usually migrates the information gracefully.

The underlying file system doesn't matter, it's the re-design of the registry which will prevent you from doing a simple export/import

    Cheers
