I have the basic Hauppauge (sp?) WinTV card and have been using and recording TV with it fine for a while, but im sure theres ways to get better quality captures so want some advice on how to set the software up. atm i use virtualdub to capture, using xvid at 1/2 screen size and uncompressed audio. This gives reasonably quality and size but the video is upside down, so i flip it using vdub and compress the audio. Are there any other codecs that are good for this? Most of the other ones ive tried either drop loads of frames or mess up the colour.

Secondly, what software do you guys use? The software bundled with it is ok, but the ability to set it up to record at a certain time (like on a proper vcr) or even pause live tv would be nice.

I use videoghost which seems to use the codecs you have installed on your pc. But it can only do upto 60mins.
Or you could try http://kickme.to/svcdcorder which will do svcd for you.

You could try http://www.myhtpc.net/ for a frontend and tv module, but if your on linux try mythTV people swear by that.
