    Hey guys,

Okay here is my question. I am wondering if someone makes short extensions to all of the wires you find on the back of your ATX motherboard. That sounds kind of odd, so let me draw you what I am talking about.

Use this circle as an example.

Okay, say you want to put a motherboard in that circle. Now, I know you are saying, WHAT!? A square in a circle, well, this is for example only, so bear with me. Lets stick a motherboard in there shall we?

Alright, now that we have that in there, you can begin to see the problem. How on earth are we going to connect the wires to the motherboard if it isn’t touching the outside? Keep in mind for this example, the motherboard MUST stay in the middle of the circle.

So my question is how can I extend the ports to the outside of the circle? USB should be simple right? Just get one of those hubs and stick it on the outside of the circle, however, what about the VGA, or digital monitor cable? I know they have VGA extensions, but those can be close to 5 feet, if you look at the circle, relatively speaking, it’s only a few inches away, not 5 feet.

So whether this is in a circle, or just a pretty big case, in my case, (haha), does anyone know how I can extend these port/cable/plugin thingys. If I can buy some short 1 ft extensions, or make my own somehow?

Any who, I know its apart of modding to experiment and do things on your own, but this one I just can’t solve without having to kill Barney and shove him down Kermit’s throat for the answer.

    Thanks, -emu :dremel:

I'm assuming that you are making a cylinder shaped case... couldn't you just have a slot in the case where your cables go in and plug into the board?

If not... you could desolder all those interfaces and mount them to the outside wall and link the original board leads and the connectors with wires... but that would be a whooooooole lot of soldering and a lot could go wrong.

kudos on the nice graphics though... :D

oh, and welcome to the boards yo! (sorry, still in ghetto mode)

Well, yes, I could do that. HMMM.. alot to wire up, but if I can't do anything else, I guess I could do that.

And thank you for the welcome. :)

Just make short extension leads for those connectors you will actually use. You can buy the connectors at maplins. I have done this before...takes time but is worth it.

You could use a USB hub or the USB fly-lead for the USB ports.

A don't forget that any expansion cards will require the same treatment such as VGA card.

    Cheers, CC

    Nice pics!

Try googling it, i've seen a place where you can get 3inch cables, and then 1ft cables. There kinda expensive for what they are tho...

    btw: Welcome to bit!

Just buy 1 male & 1 female connector for every connector type and solder the connections together using wires of the correct length.
Shouldn't be that much off a problem I thing, I mean, the max. wires you'll have to solder will be for a parallel port (25x), so it should be do-able.

hehe, well, altron, i'd do that if it would work for my case, but it won't, but thanks for that..!

i'm just going to buy extenstions like green soda said, orginally when i looked, i couldn't find anything under 6 feet, but i googled again and found 1 to 3 feet, which should be okay..

ill post pictures of the rig when its done, or not.. i might do one of those project posts :)

    cheers, -emu
