I good understanding of networking, but while looking for a replacement modem/router I found myself a bit bewildered by sheer number of options.

I am a pretty heavy internet user, torrents are not uncommon, streaming video quite frequent, and regular web and email virtually constant.
Gaming is only occasional but since it's usually a long game of C&C Generals I need a connection which won't drop out.

Standard terraced house, quite a few other wireless networks visible atm, more wouldn't surprise me.
I have 3 PCs (desk and lap), potentially more later. I also have a Hauppage MVP, which streams videos (when there's a full-moon on a Tuesday in a month starting with the letter J anyway).
    Is MIMO a genuine improvement?

Budget is up to £80, though this may be stretchable if there's something particularly good.

I'd like to go beyond 54mbps, but am unsure which of the new unratified standards to go for.

I'd love to get some recommendations from people who have experience with the specific product.

    Which ISP are you with?
    What are your line stats?
Those will help decide which router to go for.

I have a Buffalo WBMR 54 which is pretty good, but I have a very poor line at the moment so it keeps on getting dropped and BT won't pull their fingers out of their arses to sort the problem out.

If you want something a bit more heavy-duty than the usual home routers, look for a Draytek Vigor 2600G on eBay - it only goes to 54MBps, but they're a proper business-class router, so it's got fancy, reliable software on it.

If you really want faster than 54MBps, the draft-N routers are supposed to be pretty good, but have a think, will you really use it? I thought I'd max out 54 a while back (when it was new), but I've hardly used it to its fullest potential. In the age of the flash drive, it's much easier to get the file that way.

WAG354G has been working fine here on 8 meg for about 7 months now. It's not draft-N, but you only notice that for file transfer within your network.

I have used netgear DG834G, the last 4 months on 8meg. Tend to get about 5 or 6 meg down where i am, and on torrents had over 500mb/s. Though you dont play games, i have playing fast games requiring lower latency anyway with no trouble.

    edit: i'm on bt too.

Sorry to resurrect an oldish thread, just wondering how the router has been for you over the last few months? Or anyone else who has one...looking for a router for my other half's 4-storey family house with up to 8Mb BT and was considering the DG834PN, been reading a few bad stories about it on up to 8Mb lines though and wondering what people here have experienced.

Not actually had any major problems myself.
I have had to restart it (unplug it from the mains) a couple of times though.

I've installed a few PN's and had no problems with them. Had loads of problems with all kinds of routers and "up to 8mb" though.

As you're with BT, you could always get a homehub and enjoy the free Fon internet wherever available?
edit:Didn't really read the whole thread. My bad.
