ok i know nothin about wireless networking, i need to set up cheap and easy network, one computer is in the persons kitchen a laptop and the other is in the bedroom, the main phone line is in the kitchen, so was wondering if i could buy a wireless network hub and place it in the kitchen and use a cat 5 cable to connect the laptop to the hub and then use a wireless card to connect the pc in the bedroom, its a big house so he dont want cable running but its only a very short distance from the laptop to the hub can u have a mixed wire and wirless network runnin of one hub?

Yes you can have mixed wifi and wired connections off one router (that's what I have here), although it seems pointless to have a laptop connected up via cat5. Why not just go wireless all the way.

That would work, but I have to point out -H- mention of wireless on the laptop.

But then you would need an ADSL gateway in the router to be able to use the internet, as at the mo I'm assuming the internet will be connected to the laptop then shared to the rest of the house?

And you say its a big house, how big and how old? Because the wireless signal weakens by an average 50% as it goes through a wall.

Wonka makes a good point, depending thickness material of walls the signal could possibly decrease. Of course there are options to get around that (bigger arials etc).

I'd say Wonka's suggestion of a ADSL gateway -> router -> computers makes the most sense. At least then each computer would get internet access regardless of what the other is doing.
