Seems like a problem that would have covered the interwebz many times.

However, i am thick, very thick when it comes to linux.

I just installed ubuntu studio 9.04, and i cant seem to find any way to connect to my wireless network, i wish it had something like in windows XP where i could view all the wireless networks, then enter the details required to then get online.

Oh and another project of today was installed OSX... hehe!

    Hardware info.

    Acer Aspire 1690

    Intel Pro/Wireless 2200BG

Ok i have found a driver, but no clue on how to install it at all.

Depends of your desktop environment, but you can use wicd, network-manager,... available trough repositories.

ok, i found a guide to use ndiswrapper, however

i require 'build-essential' went to download it that was fine (used XP) and got version 1.54 as a '.deb'

Tried running it like the guide suggested from the terminal and it failed, couldn't use it.

Basically i am winging my way though this, i dont understand the lanuage or new file extensions, been an avid windows user all my life.

I must say i am loving this edition of linux, once the interwebz is up there is no stopping me.

Note i am using a 32-bit edition as my laptop dosen't support 64-bit

You can install a .deb in a couple of ways but the easiest to type is
    Code:
    sudo dpkg -1 x.deb
this should also then show in your package manager (apt)

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dpkg
    or man dpkg

no luck, i couldn't see a way to proceed.

Why cant drivers be like an .exe in windows.

I found a linux driver for my wireless card direct from Intel.

ipw2200_linux_1_2_0.tgz upon opening the archive, all i get is a few readme files which arent any help and bunch o files that dont seem to do much.

Ahhhhhhh, this is why i gave up on linux the first time around, i was jsut hoping for something to have changed!

So you've managed to install the build essential package?

Whats in the tar file? one might be a binary driver it would just need manually put in the right place and told to load it.

I'm no expert with wireless so i'm just pointing you at links i'm affraid but this looks promising... http://ipw2200.sourceforge.net/ <--- this shouldn't be necessary.

Edit: whats the output of lsmod?

more edits: Reading around you shouldn't need ndis wrapper, it would probably be helpful if you could get it on the web using a ethernet port the guides would be a bit easier to follow if you can use apt.

I think your right, i might just be having difficulties in accessing the internet rather than installing a driver.

    cable access later tonight maybe.

    Post the output of
    Code:
    sudo lsmod
that will tell us if the driver is loaded then we can work out where the problem is.

yeah there is a driver installed under the lsmod command.

    its ieee80211 used by ipw2200

i think you problems are related to dhcp, in the morning i shall attempt a wired connection, as i just want to access the internet to do the updates and use the built in add/remove software tool which i think does all the hard work of installing the apps.

i have used it to install a few apps but others require an internet access.

EDIT, this edit was bought to you by ubuntu studio 9.04 yay! However a wired network is required. Its definatly the dhcp at problem

If your getting a ip address wired then its probably not dhcp, unless your wireless access point is a bit temperamental.
There should be a windows esque wireless controller included in ubuntu, though i'm not sure what its called or where it would be for sure but try System -> Administration -> Networking.

well i think ubuntu studio 9.04 is still a little unstable, i used it inbuilt add/remove software to add openoffice and its caused a major issue causing the OS to lock up.

I am going to download the last edition which i think is far more stable. Even tho i really love this version, oh well.

I think 8.10 is pretty good its on my parents machine and i've had little to cause to look at it which for me is a ringing endorsement.

on the ubuntu studio website they mention that its not a stable release, so a odd bug might be in there, now for a dev that might not be a major issue as they know enough bash or what ever is require to work around problems.

8.4.1 is a stable release so i shall install that today when its finished downloading, but my only question is how will this effect the grub loader?

grub is a little annoying and excelent in many ways. if i use Gpart to rip the ubuntu install off, gurb gets pissy even tho its in the MBR of the HDD.

Also if at any point i want it to purly be a windows machine again, how is it possible to remove grub. thats a question i havent googled yet so i shall apollogise now for it.

I am also really interested in installing GNU grub 2, yes its a boot loader, and current grub is fine, but personally i like a fancy looking boot loader. i had a quick look and your able to use any background, so i could generate my own grub front end GUI and really make it mine!

I hope with this half move to linux will help me learn a bit more of dev, a greater understanding of coding and running linux as linux has so much potential at a fraction of the cost of windows. Some cool CAD apps require purchase.

Shouldn't effect grub at all if your just going to over write the existing partition(s).

Only part of grub is on the mbr (stage 1), this points at the /boot dir where the rest of grub is. If you just nuked your linux partition you'd bugger everything up as grub would hang while looking for the rest of it's self. Best thing to do is load the live cd and install from there, reformat the linux partion and let 8.10 over write where the 9.4 would have been.

Removing grub can be a bit of pain, theoretically you can run some dos commands from an xp repair disk to reinstate the mbr that windows expects but i've had trouble in the past doing so, but then my only windows box also dual boots so i don't really worry about it.

Never tried grub2 i'm in the if it works camp.

Glad to see you've not been completely crushed by these problems.

Well ubuntu studio 8.04 after installing just gave me a command based start up, which made no sense, i think the studio version needs alot of work still.

So i ran upstairs and grabed the ubuntu 9.04 CD i burnt yesturday and installed that, oh my god, so pain free! love it. I have yet to try the wireless yet, but i can see that going so well.

Going to start looking into theme's as i really love the look of studio professional black and blue theme that works really well.

I am a happy linux lover again!

I didn't realise it was a separate release (having a slow day). There's no reason you can't install all the software included on the default studio install to vanilla ubuntu, you might need to grab some additional repositories buts thats a super easy job.

yeah ubuntu studio is a seperate release that is basically a modified vanilla ubuntu. Its far to buggy to hassle with, all tho its got some nice standard features already installed, but i have hunted them down.

Now looking for a good place to find themes for it, would i be looking for GTK skins?

If I understand you correctly, you're looking for GTK themes. For the latest Gnome you can't go wrong with gtk-2.x themes. Plenty of choice and plenty to modify!

http://gnome-look.org and http://art.gnome.org/themes/gtk2 should keep you occupied for a good hour by themselves :)

Thanks, yeah i am searching for theme's to customize my install.

Oh and early i pulled out the ethernet cable to start trying to get the wireless to work, and bam it comes up with a list of networks, i pick mine enter the pass key and instant access to the web! love it!

i cant believe that ubuntu is actually easier to setup than XP!! no drivers required so far!
