Alright right now i have a wired network with a ps2 (an xbox sooner or later when i feel like spendin money) 4 or 5 computers and more later. Now im thinkin right now it is wired with router in my room where ps2 and 3 comps (1 gaming 1 is linux tester and other is mp3 holder) but the other comps are all on opositite areas requiring bunchs of cables. NOw to the first question and it is stupid one that i cant rly find answer 2 even though i think i know what the answer is. The question is is wired any faster then wireless i have 100mbs right now and would spend some cash on network (like 150 or so depends). Oh there is also a laptop and maybe another later that will be in network. Next thing in my room i have all those connection and i rly dont want to buy 3 desktop cards and a ps2 wireless network adapter thingy so is there a hub out there that connects to wireless network and have like 4 ports on back of ethernet plugs. OH and sry bout typing monday sucks
Alright i found anser to question about speed (it was what i thought it was)all about g and b and it runs faster than most isps provide anyways blah blah blah. But i still cant find a way to make a switch type thing wired to a wireless card so i can have an wireless switch with a couple ports in it.Other than a computer which is a waste.
most wireless routers have a few RJ45 ports on for LAN use. You can add an AP (access point) to a normal switch to provide wireless access to a wired LAN.
Thanks for help. So what your sayin is there is access points that connect to switchs so that u can do it that way. C i knew about access points but could only find ones that were usb none that had ethernet connecteors. So i can use one of these connect it 2 a switch and it would work. AP While checking things out i foudn all this. Now if im not mistakin a transfer speed of 108mbs is faster than a 100mb wired(and yes i know that it probally doesnt always run at 108 but just sayin). So would this system run like a wired network theoretically.AP Router Switch
To answer monkey the router will be set downstairs right under my room which has the modem and will ahve a desktop. My main goal is to get rid of some of the things in my room and not have wires running along walls in my house. I have more than one connection in the area that i need for a game adapter that and there conection speed on those is like 54mbs and same price as the dlink 108mbs ap.
Netgear DG384G - Wireless network router with a 4-port hub in it, pick and choose which comps/items you want wireless/wired and they're all allowed net access
sorry mate, I'm struggling to understand... You are gonna put the router downstairs, but your modem is upstairs? That doesn't make much sense to me. I think your best bet would be to have a wireless router/modem where the internet connection is which you can connect PCs to with cat5. Then if you want another room somewhere to be on the whole LAN, but not connected to the rest of the house with wires then get a switch to connect that room/s together and add a wireless bridge to get that section onto the main LAN wirelessly. ------------------------------------------ Internet---Wireless router/modem---PC1 ------------------------------------------ PC2 | | Switch----wireless bridge | | PC3 ------------------------------------------- PC4 with a wireless card (if required) -------------------------------------------
Ok monkey u hit nail on what im trying to do with ur 2nd paragraph. Sry if i wasnt clear enough. I want to put router and modem down stairs then use ap(i guess i spose to use bridge or is it AP) to go upstairs then hook that up to switch. WHich is what u said. And i would go with netgear but it is mega expensive it would cost me like 250 dollars to hook up my network compared to around 150-175 to use dlink's hyper G thingy.
cool, I'm not sure if you can use 2 APs as a bridge. You will need to check on that. I've never done it. I think you want to use the AP built into the router as the AP, and use a wireless bridge upstairs to get the whole upstairs switch onto the LAN. I *think*.
Ok so what i need to do is hook wireless router up 2 cable modem. Then use bridge connect it to the switch upstairs and bada bing bada boom its all set. 2 questions and this shoudl be it. First off is there any bridges that are 108mbs i cant find any. 2 coudl i use a router instead of a switch upstairs(i alrdy have a 4 port router right now(not wireless). Oh extra question it will be ok to use like a netgear bridge and a dlink wireless router right. OR better yet could i use my router and use an access point connected to that so i woudlnt have to buy a new router just a access point.
* 108mbps bridges - dont know * router instead of switch - possible, but hard to configure. I wouldn't recommend it. * mixing netgear + dlink - yes you can but I'm led to beleive you need to stick to one brand if you want 108mbps, otherwise its 54mbps. This might just be marketing lies. Yes, you can add an AP to your current router. If you do, look for something with a detachable antenna. In fact this might be the best option as a seperate AP could give you better range as it would be easier to place. I prefer an all in one solution but thats just me.
