Hey guys, I need a wee bit of help on a new wireless router for my house, I'm having a little bit of an issue finding a suitable router replacement for our rapidly dying Linksys WRT54G.

    Basic needs-

    - Coverage for a ~3500sqft house, with extremely dense walls ( concrete plaster.... :wallbash: )
    - Wireless G, Wireless N would be good for when I upgrade my netbook in the near future
    - 4x 10/100/1000 LAN ports
    - support for DDWRT or tomato would be great, but not necessary if the factory firmware is halfway decent
    - Budget up to $125 USD
    - RJ45 WAN Port (ethernet), not RJ11

So far I'm pretty sure its going to be one of these-

    D-Link DIR-655

    BUFFALO WZR-HP-G300NH

    Asus RT-N16

    Linksys E3000

any other suggestions are very welcome, I'd like to place the order tomorrow morning, as not having a reliable net connection is aweful :waah:

I have the E3000 and I've been extremely happy with it. It has DD-WRT support; it also has simultaneous dual band, if your computer supports it. Mine has been on 24/7 for 7 months now without a problem.

How is the range on it as it has no external antennas?

    3500 sq ft ???? (325m2)

    are you kidding ?

thats like 18mx18m if it was a square.

lol maybe i just have a small house

on point though i doubt you will get a single wi-fi router to cover all that especially with the walls.

most routers have rubbish aerials and a fairly low transmit power.

id be looking at a router + a couple of AP maybe 1 up 1 down at opposite sides of the house.

always found these to be good with dual 5db aerials and variable transmit power with lots of different setup options.

I've bought a ASUS RT-N56U, to replace the POS box (Really? You need rebooting again? That's the 10th time today!) Virgin foisted on me when I had my cable installed.

Dual band (2.4 & 5ghz), 4 Gigabit lan jacks and an RJ45 wan port for whatever modem you have. Performance is brilliant - it's not missed a beat in the 2 weeks I've had it, and the whole network at home feels faster since I've had it.

It also has 2 USB jacks for printers and USB drives etc, and it plays nice with all my Apple networking kit (Airport Expresses and an Airport Extreme upstairs).

Looks nice as well. Which kept MrsGoo happy as it resides in the hallway near the front door. :)

The range is pretty good. While using 2.4 I can get the entire house (2000-ish sq ft) and the front and back yards. Haven't tested the range with the 5GHz band.

I have the DIR-655, no DD-WRT support but that doesn't matter as the stock firmware is really good. Rock-solid stable, and the QoS functionality is pretty effective too.

yeah, It's a very oddly built, often expanded upon, house thats been in the family for ages. The Linksys WRT54G would cover the whole house without range extenders, albet with very low signal down in my room (furthest point from the router).

Cheers Mate, added to my list, does look quite nice, and hits all the

Thanks, it is slightly over my budget... but i'll keep it in mind

    Thanks
