    Hey

Right i want a wireless router for my home but a little puzzled on which to buy. I have seen this D-Link AirPlus XtremeG DI-624+ Enhanced 2.4GHz Wireless Router for £62 on OCUk but there is a model up the D-Link AirXpert DI-774 Wireless Enhanced 5GHz/2.4GHz Router (NW-021-DL) which is £90 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Wireless_Routers.html
Is the more expensive one a lot better?

As i don't really want to spend that much and also the cards for the router are double the price. I want to connect my desktop PC, my laptop and my brothers PC who lives houses away so will i need to buy a wiress card for my desktop of will the router be connected to the Main Pc and act as the server?

    Cheers

Is this for ADSL or cable? Do you already have a modem? What are you networking for? i.e internet sharing, gaming, backup etc etc.

IMO if you just want it to share out internet access then 54mbps 802.11g is more than enough, you don't need the faster one. even 11mbps 802.11b would be enough for that.

The PC you have can be connected to the router with a cat5e cable. most of these wireless routers have 4 port switches built in.

Personally I prefer the netgear stuff, but thats cos I have used it and get on with it and It hasn't let me down yet. I've had problems with Linksys and 3com stuff so now i steer well clear of those but, again, this is just personal experience.

I've just realised you want to connect your bro who lives down the road. That makes it a bit more complicated. I'm no expert but I have been looking into this. You may need a seperate antenna. I'm building a similar setup but to keep costs down and to keep it simple, i'm getting 100m of external grade cat5 to connect my mate down the road and I'm using a netgear WGR614 54mbps wireless router to connect my laptop to my network.

from what HK has told me (he's on these forums + is a bit of a pro on this) I think i would need to get 2 seperate antennas in order to create a wireless link across a few houses. To do this you would want to use a seperate Access Point at each house which has a detachable antenna. The netger WGR614 has a fixed antenna. you can still use a wireless router for your laptop, and have the seperate AP for the wireless link to your bro.

Have you got a budget for this?

Oh dear .. I thought this was going to be a simply job which it does not sound like it will be. I thought i might be a ble to rech his house with a normal router. Right so will have to re-think this one. Still will need a router anyhow as i want to connect my laptop to the network.

In that case mate, I fully recommend the WGR614. I got a refurbished one on ebay for about 50 quid delivered.

Plenty fast enough for internet access for your laptop. If you did get these 2 then you could always take your lappy to your bro's house and see if the signal was good enough. If not you could always add a more powerful AP at a later date. How many houses inbetween? Is there stuff blocking the way?

IF your laptop doesnt have built in wireless then get a 54mpbs PCMICA card for it. I'm a netgear pimp so I'd say get the WG511. Cheapest I've seen those was at www.microdirect.com.

oh yeah, some 802.11g can operate at 104mbps which is 2X the speed of normal 802.11g, but the gear is expensive and i think the max distances are shorter or something.
