be careful - might be wrong about this but some insurance companies will refuse to insure/bump your rates up for a car that has been written off in the past.

Seriously though, free flowing exhaust and decent panel filter is probably the easiest things to do. Get the head ported/polished?

Depends what catagory of write off it is.

iirc after its been written off you will need to get a certain type of certificate to say the car is road worthy and insurable again.

Only just read this, the guy drove into the back of you and you are not claiming from his insurance?
You should be able to claim the excess direct from his insurance company, either that or you pay your excess then your insurance claims it back.

[edit] no idea what I had just wrote there myself, and I didn't even have a drink.

Nah Norwich Union seemingly will pursue it on my behalf, pay the costs minus the excess, then once successful will refund my excess to me. Sounds mad, but the way it was explained it means I should get the car fixed (fingers crossed) a lot more quickly than if I had to wait for his company to pay up. Althought you're making me paranoid now... heh heh.

yah mook that is common in the insurance industry. Your company gives you what they think they can get out of the other compan. then they settle with the other company at their leasure, or take them to court. Often times they score a little more cash then they paid you. But you get your car back faster.

    Good Luck

Oh and for us Yanks what is an H registration?

Referrs to the Registration plate... Means the car was registered between 1 August 1990 - 31 July 1991.

Been to the repair centre today. No firm estimate but the chap reckoned could be in the region of £800-900. Blimey. Won't know for sure for a couple of days.

Personally I found it a lot faster to go through the third partys insurance then my own (and they offered me considerably more money) when a silly woman in a volvo didn't look and did this...

As they admitted full responsibility it all flew through (I'm still a few hundred down as the replacement cost more for less of a car but thats always the way)

If it's written off you can buy it back and depending on the catogory you can get it back on the road... (I am still trying to get that back as it looks far worse then it is.) a cat D just needs an Engineers report on the repairs and a new MOT, a cat C needs a VOSA check, an Enginners Report and a new MOT.

It could be worse a B needs a certificate of dismantling and an A needs to be crushed, do not pass go, don't collect £200.

Okay update time. Just got off the phone with four different departments in India somewhere... and finally a fifth transfer to a Welsh fella called Alan

Anyway, its a mix of good-ish and bad news.

First off, the repair bill has been provided as a (staggering) £1161.51. This roughly breaks down to £220 for a new bumper, £497 for general labour, £171 for paint materials, plus VAT and misc costs. The panel at the back has been costed as requiring cutting out and rewelding a new one in - plus painting it. Seems excessive to me...

It is also now officially considered a Cat C write off - I had expected D instead.

After some haggling and pursuasion, the value of the car has been increased from £800 to £1000 - which is fair I suppose as I paid a grand for mine, and for the milage and age it seems about right I think (although I was lucky to find one like mine for the price I did pay, come to think of it).

    Which leaves me two options:

    - Take the £1000 and buy another car.
    - Take £750 plus the car and get it fixed.

I really can't decide what to do. On the one hand I would like my car repaired and back to how it was, but the hassle that is likely to now be involved in getting it fixed for less than £750 seems offputting - as does the required list of checks and the additional MOT needed (not to mention apparent additional problems with insurance and it's future value if I did decide to sell it on).

My current car is far from perfect, it does have a number of areas I need to look at and sort out. But then again is that not just an excuse to go for a new-used car?

Honestly, i think buying a new car for £1000 would be the smart move, but everyone has an attatchment to their cars, so really it comes down to how much you love it :D

Take the 700, buy a new(ish) bumper, and knock out the dent yourself. At least you don't have an idiot for a father who dents the back of your parked car ('90 VW Jetta) so hard the paint chips off in approx. the same location :sigh:
