    Wow. Just Wow.

Hey by the way, remove the www.youtube.com/ part from your embed code, you only want the bit that's on the end of the link to embed ;)

This is well known about, infact I was taught about it as a child, if you lay perfectly still under a train between the tracks there's enough space for you to easily survive.

what's the deal with the green circles drawn on the cars that pass by? looks like some sort of recognition system at play, but what?

Reminds me of an episode where a friend was driving a car (I was a passenger). He managed to run over a large seagull sitting in the middle of the road. When we looked back the bird just looked at us and walked calmly away.

The car was a small offroader with large tires. Just enough clearance for a bird. :)

Probably some sort of ATC. If some car stops on the tracks it warns the train.

Hah, I set that to load and switched tabs, and then - Hebrew! It's been a coupla months since I rode an Israeli train but I'll say this - the way those are run, it's probably cheaper and easier to lie on the tracks than to pay for a ticket...

Please do not try this at home (model kits are small and delicate)

I asked myself the same question. It seems to register movement, so it's probably a motion activated camera and highlights the motion that is acting in frame for easy recognition of suspects etc.

We have a motion sensitive camera system in work, although as far as I am aware it does not highlight like that. It just activates a lens and records immediately once movement is detected in frame.

Having spent a few months writing facial recognition software, it seems to work in a very similar way - highlighting vehicles based on their shape rather than movement (notice it doesn't highlight the other pedestrians) Interesting vid though.

It highlights the attendant in the orange high-vis jacket later on though.

It's definitely recognition software that runs to see what's on the tracks, presumably it reports a stuck/parked vehicle to the operators and maybe decides if it's possible for a train to stop in time.

    No.
It all depends on the size of the rail and the type of train car. Heavy traffic lines have heavier rails (the heavier the rail, the taller it is).
Also, passenger cars have different brake rigging than freight cars.
I used to repair/rebuild freight cars for a railroad.
The young lady in this video was extremely lucky.

I'm amazed it hasn't occurred to anybody that she might not have been trying to kill herself. She's not american or male, so not totally stupid, and rather than resting any of her body parts on the track (which would surely just be common sense) she lies between the rails? What could she have been expecting to happen

At best, you'd get mangled and dragged along the sleepers, dying a slow and horrific death; if you placed your neck over a rail, you'd be dead almost instantly. And AFAIK suicidal people don't strive for protracted suffering and uncertainty - quite the opposite. There's just no way she was attempting suicide - I suspect it was some sort of spontaneous thrill-seeking thing, or a bet, or stunt, or something. I must say, I've always been tempted to try it, but was never sure if the clearance was really enough or not.

Often, the clearance is not. Daredevils have unintentionally killed themselves that way.

Don't try this at home, kids. :nono:
