Today i broke off a coil or what i believe to be a coil from electronic class :)

The part is labeled L16... The board is out of warranty so no biggie on killing the board more..

My question is can I jump the 2 soidering points with a small wire and the board possibly post? Or should i spend 250$ on a new motherboard?

Look at the component. Does it have colored bands around it? (like a resistor)

It it have you know the value, and you can get a new one. If not, you are out of luck. there is a reason for that component to be there, so a wire will probably not work very well.

Is the component itself broken, or is it just chipped of?

No the component is not a resister it is labled L which is a coil (inducted) and yeah LOL i broke it completly off..

So i might just break down and purchase a new one Intel said they can repair it for 30$ so i might just go that route.

$30 mobo repair doesn't sound too bad, but i've never had one repaired out of warranty so i dunno.

Some inductors have coloured bands like a resistor would.

Don't try to short it with a wire. The inductor is there to store energy in the switching regulator! Why can't you solder it back on?

if you have the piece you broke off and its in one piece... you could probably solder it back on if you have a fine iron and s decent hand, have pics of the broken inductor?

Thanks guys for the replys :) but sadly the inductor is in many pieces when i hit it with the screw driver it shattered the part.... So no no way of soidering it back on.

Intel says they can repair the board for 30$ because it is a server board. So i might go that route. No worries on the upgrade at all. I love the board and the Xeons that go with it... I was just trying to a hard disk upgrade and well slipped and it was all over :| amazing how something so tiny is soooo important. the one below it cant be but maybe as big as :D this smiley...
