I've never played it, the closest thing i've ever played to it was the original Runescape :p

Should i buy it, or would it be goodbye life and Girlfriend?

I quite enjoy it to a point but have got bored of how it requires a hell of a lot of grind to make it really worthwhile. It's not really a drop in for an hour type of game.

If you want something that's more compatible with life and a girlfriend but want an MMORPG, I would still recommend Guild Wars (though GW2 likely due out end of this year or early next). There's no subcription and nothing like the grind required to actually enjoy it. Maybe less rewarding, ultimately, as a result...but much better to have a real life :)

If your interested in trying it, you should probably wait for the new Cataclysm expansion thats due this year. Its going to revamp all of the starting areas with new content to make it more new user friendly.

The other thing to be careful of is that there are a lot of WoW haters out there. My advice is do not listen to... anyone and just try the game and form you own opinion.

ive tried it and never really enjoyed it.

i liked the concept and depth involved but never got into it because of several reasons. i managed to get to around lvl 25 before i quit

1 - not fussed with the combat system seems distant and non-engaging
2 - too many kiddies shouting noob, DUEL with me !!! 24/7
3 - i played it for over a month and no one helped me and the people that did join quests with me and such left after getting the bit they need not helping with mine bit.

4 - very snobish your a noob with crap everything unless its the BEST gear EVER.

id give it a go on the free trail before you make the plunge and buy it as its not for everyone and does require a significant amount of your time.

The quality of the 'community' in WoW has taken a nosedive in recent times with an overall increase in loltards, 'noob-spewers', flamers and other immature twats in general; helped no doubt by the impersonal and over-convenient dungeon-finder they added to the game not too long ago.
There are little to no consequences for anyone being a dick in the game these days now that one's reputation doesn't even matter on a realm any more, and it really seems to have brought the worst out in people.

On top of that, prepare to feel like anything you achieve in the game is futile (beyond the fact that it's just a game) simply because Blizzard will render it completely irrelevant and available to every guy and his dog with the next content patch they bring out.
In their endless quest to make everyone who plays WoW feel special, Blizzard have managed to make nobody feel special (other than the no-lifers with world first boss kills) and everybody look and feel the same.

Of course, I still play it - But that's because I play on an RP realm where things are marginally better and where there's more to do than just grinding dungeons for emblems to buy gear.

As others have said - Wait for Cataclysm, it promises to be a better game then, all the way from level 1 to 85.

Even though its supposed to be social game its not very social anymore IMHO. The huge majority of players are out for themselves. You might as well play a single player game.

If you get addicted real life is over.

If you must play (now instead of waiting for Cataclsym) I suggest playing one character to 80 and quiting immediately, game over. Doing the end game grind is nothing but a time sink for Blizzard to keep collecting $15 a month.

Yeah, wow is worth playing if you have a good guild. There are alot of kids on there and they are a real bunch of idiots, but I for example play in a mature guild with lots of my friends and other "nice" people from our realm, so we have a really nice mature social atmosphere- which makes every part of the game more fun.

If I didn't have a nice friendly guild its likely I wouldn't play.

This, it's make or break on whether you get good friends ingame, basically.

    Have to agree.

At endgame level, wow is either meh or very good.
'meh' if solo, very good in a friendly guild. and that really is the main issue. :p

Must also mention though that at the moment, wow is a bit distorted because it's been going on so long.

level 1-60 was great at the time, but after two huge expansions, 1-60 is now something you want to level past as quick as possible. The game now doesn't even really start until you hit the first exp pack at ~lvl58, and low level gameplay is hugely distorted by mechanics changes designed to balance out max-level gameplay. (ie levelling a caster = pain incarnate for the first ~30 levels, where it suddenly then gets boosted. It all kind of balances out at the end, but distorted when levelling)

The low level content is being completely redone for the next expansion though, so if you're planning to start from scratch, i'd advise waiting for this to come out first.

WoW is pretty fun even if you avoid human contact nigh-entirely.
    Just saying.

Just try the trial, and figure out if you want to keep playing.

Personally I can't stay interested in it for more than a month at a time.
    But I'm odd I guess.

The most important part of an MMORPG is the MM, otherwise it's just an expensive RPG with an always-online DRM!

But seriously, after three years of play (not the longest, but certainly enough to make me qualified) there are a few things to be wary of:

-There will be very little challenge. World of Warcraft has never been a particularly difficult game and has only been getting easier and easier to allow for a broader range of players. The greatest "challenge" in the game is having good enough gear to go to higher end raid instances, other than that your actual gameplay mechanics are "press rotation of buttons lololol". If you enjoy a pretty simple game to play just for some easy entertainment that is perfectly fine, just don't go in misguided.

-With the exception of any friends/good guild mates you come across, everyone is a completely unhelpful douche with the social skills of an autistic seagull. Low level will consist of the occassional other new player who always seems to be so incompetent that you will be left wondering just how he/she was able to purchase, install and then log in to the game with such obviously limited intelligence. High level will be other players who have been playing for far longer than you and are willing to devote far more hours than you and will always have better gear than you. You will quickly find yourself trodding along as overgeared characters do everything for you in an attempt to quickly farm currency items for themselves. "Raiding" for the first few months will be joining a random group of 24 other people who were bored enough to assemble a group and then go and actually attempt a raid, and probably succeed because everything except the latest one will be tiresomely easy. Between those raids you will find yourself repeating the same 10 "heroic" dungeons in an attempt to farm more currency items to get better gear. Should you farm enough "heroics" and become one of those well geared players you will quickly find that again everyone else is now completely incompetent somehow and that you are the only sensible person in the entire game.

-You will always lose in PvP. Exception being if you devote frightening amounts of time to practicing to heighten your skills farming PvP currency items to get gear.

    -Never read trade chat.

-"Wouldn't it be so awesome to roll a rogue on a PvP server and just gank people?!" No. You'll most likely spring from the shadows only to meet your untimely and embarrassing demise.

-You will always be wondering why you aren't playing Guild Wars and saving yourself $15 a month.

So there's my warning rant. Try the trial, try various classes so you get an okay feel for the game. Sadly, the <20 levels are very different from the >20 levels so the trial won't give you the full scoop. Don't worry about waiting for Cataclysm, levelling has been made very easy already. If you still enjoy any sense of satisfaction or accomplisment from levelling then I suggest playing now.

I've stopped playing again now, shot up to 65 quite quickly and have a load of cash but lost interest again. I probably would easily get back into it but I can't be bothered. I want to play EVE more than WoW right now, but I can't really afford the sub :(

If you want a trial code let me know and I'll send it.

I'll agree that it isn't for everyone, but I am qualified to say that I like it [1] [2] [3] [4]

I like the game quite a bit (played '06-'08 and then from the start of this year again) and undoubtedly my favourite part of the game is PvP, which can get extremely frustrating at times. But the competition makes it fun for me.

If you are going to play the game i would advise you roll either a warrior or paladin. These classes have a great deal of survivability when levelling and in end-game, they are both fairly easy to play but with skill they can both be fantastic in both PvP and PvE. However i find PvE to be a bit repetitive since it basicly boils down to pressing 1-5 buttons in a simple rotation.

The thing that sucks you in with this game is not the play or the endless greed for improved gear or the "Prestige" of achievements/titles that you will experience it is however the community. The friends you make and the guild mates who rely on you as you do them. By all means give it a go but do not appear to be unsure on what amount of time you tell other people you are willing to play since you will spend your life on the game. Also DO NOT join a guild with a minimum raid time requirement.

Or a guild with a daily in-game-currency fee. (Yes, they exist :()

Or a "serious business" guild generally. They're ***holes.

edit - nice characters Zoon, but why are you levelling 4 in parallel? Do you get bored if you have one main? I'm the absolute opposite, I can't stand doing the same content twice so I've only ever had one real character.

Also, silly gnome, what were you doing in Wailing Caverns? :D

WoW is quite a good game.
    End level is slightly boring.
Hit 80 do heroics get to icecrown
    YAWN

    To easy.
    PvE is ok.
    Pvp is a joke.
Far to easy pvp is no skill what so ever involved.
Everyone is out for them selves.

    I quit a month ago.
    And im not going back.
£8.99 a month for blizzard to F***K about with matinence. Login servers going down.
They dont even conpensate you for it (They used to).
WoW isnt as good as it was.

But sadly no other mmorpg can top it.
Aion tryed and failed (Though pvp is pretty dam good )

Give guild wars a shot. Apperntly its quite good.

Im stikcing to fps games so i can jump on when i like play for an hour and come off.

Not go on wow for an hour and look at the clock, S*** ive been on here for 4 hours?!!!

If you do get addicted you will find your girl friend constantly moaning at you that you play too much and you don't care about her. (my girlfriend did this and she used to play wow :/)

    But yeah.

Play the trail. See how it is.
And you make your mind up.
