Im looking at getting a new gpu - and even though i'd like a 7800gt (xfx one) for around 250+ish im looking at x850xt for around 150+ish pounds (powercolor). Is it really worth the extra 100 pounds to buy a 7800gt over the x850xt? Ive got a 9800p atm so anything will be a major increase!
I think it would be worth it but maybe you should consider spending a bit more and getting the GTX if you can or you could always go for the 1800 series
I don't know about whether the 7800 GT is worth an extra £100 - the X850XT isn't a bad card to be honest. The newer the games you play, the more likely you are to see the 7800 GT shine over X850XT, though.
Thanks for the replies guys! Im running most of my games at 1280x1024 (native for my 17" tft). Rig is A64 3200, 1gb ram and the 9800p. Ive seen cheaper 7800gt's at around 220 but ive heard that the stock hsf is v noisy and that doesnt appeal! Then i could always swap it though... So it seems that the collective wisdom here is that its worth the extra for the 7800gt? Games have been 1st person shooters really - but my rig is seriously struggling to run fear, and barely runs Q4 - time to reach for the credit card!
Fear is really badly coded 7800GTXs cant run that game at high resoloution with AA & AF. I had an X850XT and upgraded to a 7800GTX I never noticed any difference in BF2 with my 17" TFT. I now have a 20.1" widescreen so the GTX is coming in handy. If you have the extra cash then spend it if not the you could do alot worse than an X850XT
Ah well - decision made! Ordered a 7800gt yesterday, should be getting it on wednesday. It was only about 50 more than the x850 and came with cod2, sounded reasonable. Im hoping to swap the stock hsf for the zalman one if its a little on the noisy side.
Ah - feel even better now! I assumed the size of it meant that it was nice and quiet like the arctic cooler on my 9800p! Has anyone used the zalman gpu hsf's? Are they an improvement over stock in terms of cooling and quietness? Worth it?
