Thinking of making the switch to dual core - i really dont want to have to buy new ram and mobo so looking to upgrade cpu. My opty sits very happy at 2.7ghz all day, worth going for an x2 4200 over this? It seems to be getting hard to find places that sell higher clocking x2's for 939 now
Depends what you use your computer for really. If you use it for lots of multi-tasking, then go for it. Otherwise, I'd just keep using your current hardware until you can afford/need an upgrade. I've been thinking about the same thing, but I'm going to wait and buy a load of new stuff all in one go when I can afford it.
i agree, i was a 3700+ sandy user @ 3GHz all day, but then 3D modeling became a need for me to do, so kicked the 3700+ out and got a 165 opty, clocked at FX-60 speeds, never looked back!!! how ever if you are looking into a future upgrade to DDR2 system, then dont waste your money now on a 939 dual core. so wait a while. Quad cores will be cheap at the end of the year, memory will have dropped even more and DX10 cards will be cheaper and faster. if you can get a 939 x2 for the £70-80 mark then its worth it.
Of course, if you can find a dual-core Opty for similar prices, that trumps all X2s. And yes, you will notice a huge difference going from single core to dual core. I went from a single-core 4000+ (2.4 Ghz) to an Opty 165 (1.8 Ghz), and even at stock speeds, the 165 was much smoother in game.
