okay here is my build core i5 750 8gb 1600 ddr3 gtx 460 evga ssc foxcon interno katana mobo 750gb hdd here is the question I want to build a banging machine should i go for the core i7 9xx series or the sandy bridge one? I am gonna do triple sli of median cards like 470gtx or dual of like 580s or 6970s even
I would go for an i5 as I'm guessing this is for gaming? And the extra cores on the i7 make no diff. SB is better for gaming and 1366 us better for multiple thread apps
If it's really for gaming I'd stick with the i5 and up the GPU instead. I'd definitely also avoid triple SLI with lower cards in favor of 2-way with better ones...
Also the cougar point chipset means that 1 gpu runs at x16 bandwidth and 2 gpus run at 8x each so one good card such as a 6970 or 580 would be better than 2/3x6850 or 2x460
Go Sandynridge. The only advantage of Nehalem is more RAM bandwidth. And if you're going to do multiple GPUs all you need is a 8x PCI-E 2.0. It'll run without any performance hiccups. If you don't want to hassle with the drivers, get one card, if you want to save a bit of money, but put yourself at the mercy of drivers, get two. I'd get a 570 if I had the cash rather than 2x 6850s or 2x460/560s.
Get a Msi p67a-gd53. Great mobo full stop and is only £100. Plus you can spend the extra on ssd and 8th ram, maybe a nice corsair ax powersupply or even a better single gpu. Im in the process of setting up a tri-sli (gtx580) sandybridge rig for 3 dell u2311h monitors for nvidia surround. It's a big headache.
