    ok here is the story...

I am planning to upgrade my comp, starting wiv mobo + memory.

At the moment i have my eye on 1 or 2 boards.
    ASUS A7V8X
    Abit KD7
My spending limit is of around £100 maybe...but i need to get some DDR memory seeing as tho this is a big step up from my good old PC133.

Ne comments on the two boards?
I dont need RAID, or that Serial ATA...
Ne other mobo's i could get?

    Thanks Peeps

Asus A7N8X agreed. Don't forget to buy two sticks of DDR to utilise the boards dual capabilities. If you can afford it, go for CAS 2 ram.

No he isn't, it's because it is the highest performance Athlon board available.

Don't get the Asus A7V8X, for £100 you may as well get an nforce 2 based mobo. The Epox 8rda+ can be had for £90 and that has the soundstorm audio which the asus nforce 2 board does not have unless you buy the ultra. Stay clear of the A7V8X, nforce 2 is way better.

    Thread jack....

I have been looking at the Asus A7V8X and MSI K7N2 boards, both around £75 at Ebuyer.

I will probably get an XP2000 chip at the moment, but would like to get something like a Barton core XP3000 for Christmas when it has come down in price a bit/lot.

Both these boards are quoted as only supporting Thoroughbred chip cores, is Barton compatability just a bios upgrade away, or does it need a re-engineered motherboard? Both boards support 166 bus speeds.

Hope any responses will be helpful to you Djinn

Do you mean the A7N 8X or the A7V 8X? The A7V8X is a via chipset board hence the V and the N means Nforce 2 board. If you mean the A7N8X then yes the barton works, it works with my other 2 Nforce2 boards too :)

i have actually decided to get neither of them boards, im gonna go wiv the Abit KD7 Socket A 266FSB DDR400 8xAGP ATA133 ATX Motherboard 6 Channel Audio.

This is mainly cos my good friend m_d_k has told me its quite a good board and for my low budget i think its worth while gettin it. Thanks 4 all the input guys!

Seriously reconsider please!! The KD7 is not a good board, none of the via chipsets are all that great especially not KT400's they're awful! Epox 8rda+ has Soundstorm, which is as good as a proper PCI card like an Audigy, it's also far faster than the KD7 and has none of the bugs as it's not based on a Via chipset. OcUK are selling the 8rda+ for £92 you'd be mad to buy a Via board.......

    Thanks Iceman,
It was the Asus Via 400 board I was thinking of but I guess for the extra £15 the Nforce is a better bet. I will have a look at the Epox board before I decide.

Abit KD7 Raid owner here, no problems at all with my board, no bugs have shown up yet either.

I was going to have an Nforce 2 board, but at the time my budget couldn't quite stretch to it.
