I'm about to start a few podcasts, so I bought a $30 plantronics headset/mic set (I've heard they are good for starting cheap.) and I'm not too impressed with the volume of the sound. (The quality is decent for a PC mic though.) If I forked over the cash for a sound-blaster X-Fi Platinum, would I be able to record better? Or would I simply be able to play higher-quality surround in games? (I don't game anymore.) Should I just go cheap and stick with my nForce 2 chip until I can afford a proper mixer with phantom power and a decent mic?
Yer you're going to expect some trashy audio from equitment around that price, what brands are they BTW? If they are no name or just a PC shop boxed and bought them its not your soundcasd, its the mic.... You should try out a few podcasts, get some feedback and then make the descision wether or not to purchase some high brow mics and headsets...
I had a Logitech Gaming Headset a while back (before I broke it) and the microphone quality was extremely good - it was also fairly cheap. However, the earphone style might not be to your taste.
When Bindi and H and I do ours, I use a logitech behind-the-head gaming headset. It really works quite well, though it is a touch quiet. That's the worst I can say for it, though...the audio quality is none too bad, and I use on-board sound as well. Actually, the weakest link in our chain is a coin-flip between skype and Bindi's router.
lmao sounds like bindi's got network issue's perhaps the people should help him out. for better sound recording would require a better mic compared to buying a new sound card. but if you the money i say buy the sound card as it will imporve game play feel in games
If I could podcast from work, it would be fantastic, but I either share a net connection with 10 others who whore it for all its worth, or, do it from home on a flaky router. I use a £30 platronics headset with ac97 on my lappy. I was using my exitigy which DID make it better but Hiren is using that now. What's your podcast then??
£20 Plantronics headset with bindi's exitigy, get away from onboard would be my advice. (Not need to go ott) but any decent soundcard has to be better than onboard.
I think I'll stick with onboard and get some feedback before making any investments, as olly mentioned. I still need to get at least 4 podcasts planned and 2 recorded before I get too ahead of myself anyway. (When I do get it done, it will be a Christian Geek podcast, since there aren't too many of those out atm.)
