I was thinking about getting a new CPU for my board, the Gigabyte GA-8INXP. Currently i got a 2.8 Northwood 533 that overclocked to 3.2ghz. I Was thinking of going with the Northwood 800mhz. I know my board dosent souport the 800mhz what im thinking was, if i get lets say a 3.2ghz 800, the system will underclock it till the fsb is back at 533. If im not mistaken the speed will now be 2.1ghz, then i would Overclock it back till it got to 3.2ghz. would this work? has anyone tryed it?

As long as the socket is the same which i assume it is, then the mobo will just set the fsb down to what it can cope with - i tried this years ago on an old system and it worked, should work with this too.

Should work as long as the 800 can function correctly at 533, might be worth getting someone to test it before you buy

It wouldnt be running at 533 once i change the FSB to get it back at 800. From there i can probably overclock it further.

Yeh but in order to change the FSB you need it to function at 533 initially :p

it is pretty likely that if your board doesnt support 800MHz fsb it will crap out well before the 800fsb mark when "overclocking" the cpu back to stock, let alone allow for even further overclocking
