I'd certainly recommend the upgrade in memory, but yep, should be okay. Check beforehand that everything built in has Vista drivers, e.g. the webcam.

Vista would work fine... as for your video card, I don't know with it will support Aero...
However, Microsoft created a nice tool that detects your hardware and shows you what is compatible and not.

Just a note on it, because you don't have a TV-Tuner, it may tell you that you cannot support Media Center (or Home Premium)... just ignore that one (I don't have a TV-Tuner, and Media Center runs just fine). If it shows that everything is fine and suggest anything AT or ABOVE Home Premium, you will know that Vista should run fine.

You could try Vista 64-bit, if you have it. It will be a bit more powerful for your 32-bit application and run 64-bit programs, you will see a increase performance in Vista, but nothing major. Also, although it is set the 32-bit version of all Media Center and Windows Media Player, you can use the 64-bit edition with 64-bit codecs, and enjoy an even better performance increase on your video, which COULD (I don't have a laptop to test this, I could be 100% wrong) lead to a slight battery life increase when you are watching movies.
However you have to make SURE that 64-bit drivers exists for everything inside your computer and peripherals. And you could have some hardware where the 64-bit driver sucks (but I'll be surprised) which could lead to a decrease in performance.

May I ask why you want to upgrade from Home Premium to ultimate?

Just the fact that you ask is a good indication that you won't need the extra features ultimate offers over Home Premium.

It would be like going from XP home to XP pro which, for a home user, is pointless. (in most cases)

Unless you really want dreamscene. (Which is a really bad idea on a laptop.)

oh, and Ultimate won't run any faster than home premium.

May I ask you why you had Vista (Home Premium) installed, and then swapped to XP (Professioinal), and now want to go back to Vista (Ultimate)?

The OP probably wants the bling factor.

Either that, or Bitlocker... or Fax tools etc...

You need a compatible mobo for Bitlocker Encryption...
But perhaps he wants the advance Backup feature, and advance Networking features (Business Edition) all the same time with Media Center and all Windows programs (Movie Maker, etc..).
