yesterday a mate of mine sent me a 40 gig hard drive. It was one he bought of me last year claiming it was faulty, making odd noises and stuff so he wanted me to check it out.

When I ran fdisk, yup I saw what he was on about, I let the drive run through, did a format and found there to be bad sectors on it. So off I went to IBM's website downlaoded the tool required for the 40 gig Deskstar.

After running all the testz (which said there was nothing wrong with the drive) I though I'd do a LLF (Low Level Format) That took somethinglike 5 hours to complete. Ran Fdisk and the weird grinding noises had gone. Did format bad secptd had gone, drives full cpacity was still there after a format.

Anyway got in touch with my mate who said he didn't want the drive back (fair enough) so I sai dI'd send him my maxtor 40 gig I'm now running his 40 gig IBM Desktar (one of the 5400 RPM models) and it's working well, at least for now, what I want to know is that should I trust this drive or not?? Bit wary of really doing so butI have o real option and I can't send it back to IBM as they'll send it back to me saying theres nothing wrong with it.

Behemoth - get that maxtor back as soon as you can mate, even if the IBM you're using may be a 'good' one i still wouldn't run it.

depends how much you value your data i suppose

I'm sat here waiting for my drive to fail, I can't rest with this piece of **** in my box everytime I boot up I expect to hear the dreaded clicking.

Behemoth can you give me a link for the drive tool and also what command paremeters do I add at the dos prompt to start a low level format?

Yeah I cansend you the program if you want. I've still got the Maxtor here, my mate says he doesn't want the replacemnt drive till he comes back from Uni I think in 2 weeks time.

Like I said the drive isn't one of the 7200 RPM GXP models, I wouldn't touch them witha barge pole. My system is set in the folloiwing way 9 gig SCSI is my boot drive with all my main apps on, 40 gig is my games drive and the 20 gig is my downloads drive. So should the IBM go down whilst I'm using I'm not all that fussed about waiting for a replacement as all my important dat is on my 20 gig drive.

I've got 2 years warranty left on the IBM, and you can bet money on it that I won't have this drive come 2 years later.

However I am just a little worried about using it, but I guess I'll just have to cross the brdige of it failing (big style) like IBM drives do.
