another bad shock, I was building a disposable camera taser and I clipped out the capacitor. so, I was trying to get it out and then i forgot the other wire was there and zap! 320V into my finger, or atleast thats what the capacitor says on it.

(off topic) How would I go about charging a 350V 300uF capacitor? would a 120V wallsocket work? the capacitor is 320V so I dont see any problems with 120V, but I dont want to blow it up, its a good capacitor.

you should use a bridge rectifier. If you put AC into a polarized capacitor, it will explode. If you use a bridge rectifier (or make one), you'll be fine.

I jumped so high, it was funny

should charge to fulll potential (or like 99%) in a short amount of time - like 500 microsec.

Electricity is sooo much fun to play with. Guess that's why I'm an electrician, an being an electrician I've had my fair share of shocks. I'd have to say the best one though wasn't by direct link to any electrical lines.
My employer sent me out with a bucket truck to fix some lights in a parking lot. 30 foot poles not bad. 15-20 foot from the poles though are some High Voltage transmision lines. Somewhere near 40 or 50 KV. When I went to take apart the defective light fixture I got one hell of a jolt. I jumped so much that I dropped my screw driver and it almost hit a car that was below me. Half of my tools came out of my tool pouch as well. wtf??? oh yeah.. Static electricity all around coming from the high volt lines not too far away.
Needless to say I went back to the shop to get some insulated gloves. Which from the looks of things here, a lot of you should have a pair. The ones we have are rated for up to 25 KV. Nice thick rubber gloves.
yup some of you could really benefit from those :D

What was really cool was the arcing when I was opening the fixture. I was seeiong about a 3 - 4 inch arc.

    my story's the dumbest...

i'll tell you right now, i hang out with really smart people, and then the dumb ones. two of the dumb ones were playing with one of their parents 100,000 v. stunguns. shocking each other through their boots. the burning smell attracted a school official... oh yeah did :duh: i tell you they were AT SCHOOL? :wallbash: :duh: :nono: he got two weeks suspension and 16 months probation. i make him tardy to A SINGLE class, get him in one fight, or tell the teachers about the books in his backpack (the schools gestapo looks down on guns & ammo) gone to the lockdown school for the bad kids... hehehe

probably won't though, he's my friend

I love G&A too, i like "Down on the Border" by Bart Skelton, reminds me of my grandpa. also partial to that dumb criminals article that shows up every once in a while.

society sees people like us (gun enthusiasts) as dumbasses who have no self-control, and anyone who owns a gun is a future criminal. which is just not true. but when the kid was just arrested for having a "dangerous weapon" even though stunguns were designed specifically to NOT hurt people, and now he has those politically un-correct books in his backpack, recipie for disaster.

I could rail on for hours about how guns are (obviously... well to me) inanimate objects, and so they are not evil. some people aren't qualified to drive a car, we stop them from using cars, we do not ban cars and (pardon the pun) get them off the street, why are guns any different? but :sigh: thats for another thread... maybe tomorrow I'll put up a thread to ask your opinion on guns, then i'll give you the right one (mine)

see, normally i always am careful when working with high volt/amperage stuff and wear my thick rubber gloves, especially when working with an open PSU. (the thought of actually dying because of carelessness frightens me :eeek: )

but somehow twice i've been shocked by standard american household voltage (120v) and amperage. one time i was unplugging my bass guitar amp with one hand and the plug was stubborn, and i accidentally touched both leads when it was halfway plugged in. ouch. this hurt but since i didn't see what i was doing it didn't startle me.

then a second time i was trying to tell if my multimeter was functioning or not, so i stuck it in a wall outlet like i'd done before. but i don't think i had the test leads all the way in and they were too close together, so they arced across each other and to my hand, made a very large red flash/spark and puff of black smoke and shut my TV and lights off in my room. (and made the lights in the rest of the house dim for a second) this time it startled me big time and i jumped up and yelled the F word and threw the multimeter at the wall. (the funny thing is, i even thought to myself before doing it, "you know, i should wear my gloves. oh well, i won't need them")

Although I've been messing around with electronics for years I've never had a shock.

Came close once when for some reason I decided it would be a good idea to shorten an extension lead cable by cutting through it with some scissors. Didn't bother switching it off first though. Heard a bang, and thought "oh, f***!" - luckily it only blew the fuse in the socket - oh, and blew a hefty chunk of metal out of the scissors, which had plastic handles (probably saved my life) :D

Since this happened I've generally been more careful (touchwood).

440V AC from my tumb, to the pointing finger (probably called index finger or sumpthing) and btw, they were wet.. i was mounting a 3 phase 440V outlet up in the celing in a trawlers factory..and the place was just washed down with a hose... (damn those silly fishermen :waah:)

you should see what happens when you use a 12v light bulb in a 120v system. it gets HELLA-HELLA bright for a split second and then POW!!
also, I have shocked myself on batteries, camera flashes (regular hurt more than disposable) a telephone pole (un-grounded) at my high school, and a wall socket. on another note, putting a ball of alum. foil on the prongs of a circuit breaker, then throwing the main, causes quite a spectacular blue flash

Has anyone else ever seen those "Electric shock" pens? We have a couple of them now... they're great fun the first time anyone sees them, because they look just like real pens!

I think I'm a freak though... I can hold the electric on for ages without it bothering me - most people let go as soon as the shock hits them!

It is pulsed though, which means no real danger.

Edit: You can buy them here, should you have some weird reason to want to shock yourself lots...

as far as i can remember ive only ever had 2 shocks... one from when i took apart a disposable camera, i accidentaly pressed hte button for the flash, heard the realy quiet charging noise, and thought "oooh cool noise!", it got higher and higher than ZAP!! not real ouch, jsut a shock and my finger went completely stiff for around 2 seconds. damnit... forgot the other one, but ive delt some, static! at skool rub yer feet without shoes on the carpets for like 30 seconds, then walking into a maths lesson i put my finger near my m8s ear, blue spark, crackel and YOUCH!!! gr8 fun ;)

Geeze, can't remember how many times I've been shocked. Everything from a small 1v dc, right up to 500+ volts AC. I've allways been a bit of an electrical "junkie" if you will, more on the "getting electricuted" side than the actualy fiddling arround with it bit. Just today infact, I ripped the CPU and RAM out of a computer that was turned on, and got quite a jolt from the RAM (and I was even wearing heavy duity leather gloves!). Too bad the camera didn't pick up the sparks :waah:.

I've had an electric shock before... even read through this thread the other day, almost posted...

Previously I've had a couple of 240vAC shocks... playing with transformers, etc. 50vAC/DC shocks from my TIG welder (these really tingle... but not plesently!). The disposible camera flash was fun (and accidental!)... but today, I really scared myself!

I've spent the last 2 weeks building my PC case up with the mods I've been meaning to do for a while... today I plan to fit the handles to the top of the case. These screw through the top of the case and to check clearence from the pop rivets holding the top on I started checking by looking in the side of the case and looking up... Front was fine. As I looked into the rear, over approximately 2 seconds I became aware of blue sparking near my eye and a fealing on my forehead like someone stabing hot pins into my skin...

By the time I finish writing this post I have a headache (not bad though).

The moral of this story is if you take the PSU out of it's case so it can be visible, cover it while working or your PC. Or better still turn the #@*%$%*£@# thing off. :wallbash:
