yep. the other two wires that are hooked up to the pot just set the range (high and low) for the pot. ground is the low, and 5V is the high. the middle pin is called the "wiper" pin, and when you turn the knob on the pot, it does like a windshield wiper, and moves in an arc from one side to the other. i think it should be ok to leave the pot with the two wires attached, but i would remove the pot altogether if that's possible, just to be sure.
but everything should still work with the pot hooked up shouldnt it? but arent the 5v and the gnd wires connected then?
no, they are not connected. they simply set the range. either way, just to be on the safe side, disconnect the pot completely.
kk I HOPE IT WORKS!! i just dunno if i can do it before the weekend btw, in order for the row of blocks to show up, do i need to have software installed and be trying to send a signal?
nope. don't freak out though if you don't see the blocks. i have put together about 25-30 of these things, and i have had a few that didn't ever show the blocks at all- but they worked perfectly fine.
dammit still doesnt work, I DONT GET IT!!!!!!!!! WTF god dangit, im thinking about just buying a serial or usb lcd, but then id be mad because i bought a parallel pci card just for this dam lcd
no no! don't give up! you will get it to work. maybe some pictures would help a bit- if you have a digital camera, snap some pix and post them here, and maybe i can help you more. snap some good close ups of the contacts on the lcd, and be sure to also take pix of where the through hole contact is missing. (pin 4?) just don't give up yet.
theres nothing i can do, my camera cant take decent quality up close clear shots its either the contact from pin 4, or my lcd is F**ked nothing i can do about it
