do we have or can we get one?

I don't really want to keep shelling out fees if i have to.

    Cheers

A private server? As in a non-Blizzard, privately run... sorry completely illegal server? Or one that Bit-tech members gravitate towards?

I think It's stupid that they can make it illegal to have private servers. They should just license the server code for a small fee or for free. People will still use the paid servers because they will be of better quality, and less laggy. The support will also be better, and the cummunities will be better than private ones as the majority of people will still use the paid ones. It might even get more people into the game as the thing that is stopping me from starting playing it is I don't know that I will like it, and I don't want to waste my money. If I could try it out before then I might actually start palying the game proper.

I ran a 1.8.0-1.8.2 server for a little over a week, playing lan games with my sister, and connecting from university. Then I realized how little enjoyment there is when there are only 2 accounts on the server. Although if you could get more people playing I'm sure the entertainment value would increase.

But then there is the looming fact that Blizzard won't like you very much.
    At all.

WoW has gone to utter crap lately with their server connections the server I play on comepletely crashed yesterday, and I can't connect anymore, there is an error at the "authentication" or "handshaking" and once I get in, the "Server is unavailable." I gte d/c all the time now, I can't move too fast or else it pulls the plug on me. I know they reset every week, does it differ for servers? But I was having problems 4 days before weekly reset.

A private server would lack the infrastructure and support that WoW players take for granted on a regular Blizzard owned world. Cheating, exploits, and general griefing would be pretty rife I would imagine without paid, well supported admin staff in the background.

Ya, You're probably right. Blizzard, however bad their server uptime per X amount of days is, or successful connections, they do lend a LOT of support into it. It's like if VAC just went out of Steam. Bust out the Bighead for everyone

    Are private servers illegal?

If not we could set-one upo and attract more peeps to the community.

And us lot could be game mods etc.

I honestly dont understand how private servers are illegal, you paid for the game and thus you paid for the content. When you pay a monthly fee you pay for the servers and updating of game content. When you play on a private server, you neither use there servers or there new game content. Its kind of stupid that its illegal...just companies being greedy.

Yet it's completely up to the company. If you want to play the game, then you play it on their terms not yours - they're the ones that create the content and you're perfectly welcome not to buy the game.

You don't own the content by buying a game. You own the ability to play the game, just like you own the ability to watch a movie on DVD. It doesn't mean the intellectual and artistic content automatically becomes your property. I don't see a problem with private servers popping up for MMO's that have been closed down or disowned by the publishing company, but going down that road with a going concern (even with a shop bought copy of the game) is getting into really murky waters both morally and legally.

I think there's too much of the attitude these days that everything should be free online. Movies, music, games... and it's obvious that some people see it as their right to get these things for nothing, and that The Man has no right to stop them doing so. Sorry but this whole issue really pisses me off.

Something as astoundingly awesome of World Of Warcraft deserves the measily monthly fee imho as you won't get better value for money from any other game you could care to mention. All those millions of people subscribing to WoW can't be wrong.

I'm going to have to dissagree with you here, when you buy a game you buy the ability to play the game. Yes, you do not own it, but as long as you have the game you should be able to play it. When you log onto a warcraft server and pay a monthly fee, you are paying to play on -those- servers and paying to have -those- servers kept up, stable, running, and updated. When you remove those servers, why should it be illegal if your playing on a free public server? The original content was already paid for, thats what you do when you buy a game y'know. Your not paying monthly fee's for the game, your paying monthly fee's for the updated content and upkeep of their servers. Remove the servers, remove the fee's, it shouldnt be illegal -as long- as you bought a store copy.
