Thats cos it's not meant to go fast, and it doesn't have to go in built up areas so can't stick the place out and kill the atmosphere with horrible noise, filth, dirt etc :p

You see some big engines like these at steam rallies in the stationary engines section, kinda dwarfs my 1.5hp restoration project. :)

Nuclear powered ships only heat the steam for a turbine anyway.
Some navy ships have diesel engines or turbines power huge electric motors. The reason for this is that it is easier to reverse an electric motor than changing the direction of a diesel or turbine engine (you need gears-> gears can brake)

thats how most work, they mostly act as generaors which power everythign on the ship including the mother of all engines...I used to live near long beach harbor...you don't realize how long a supertanker is until your next to it

That engine is big but pointless. its probly only 10% efficeient if not less, its just wasting fossil fuels. Nuclear power all the way.
It puts out roughly 817.9892MegaWatts , which is a helluva lot.
    a fiesta zetec-s 1.4 is only 94kw

i saw an oil-refinery fire-fighting truck in a magazine the other day, and it jad a jet engine on the back with a water hose above it to make one helluva spray pattern. the pu out roughly 18,000 lbs of thrust. someone should throw one on a 1986 AMC Gremlin, and watch it do 600 miles an hour into the side of a mountain.

Looks like it drives the camshaft via a couple of gears. And looking at it, im guessing theres a hydraulic connection between the tappets and valves.

And as craig david would say, that things proper bo! :D

Wrong - Diesel engines are very efficient when compared to other internal combustion engines. That's one of the big reasons they're used in marine applications.

And if you read the article, you'll see that it's around 50% efficient.

    :p :D

Cool engine. I remember when I did my work experience back in the 80's (19, not 18... ;) ) at Cummings Diesel. I thought their big 14 cylinder diesel engines (used in all sorts - big dumper trucks, generators, small ships) where large. (And they are - especially when you're first introduction to them is when they're floating toward you on a gantry crane and someone shouts "Duck!")

But this blows them away! :D
