I was wondering about writing video to DVD's so they can be viewed on a TV Via a normal DVD Player. Is it like CD's and music, where you can only store 80min of "CD Player" music on a CD, you could only fit a certain amount of DVD Video on one DVD ? Or is it just as much VOB as you can cram onto it ? Is there anyway of compressing VOB files ? or for instance, if i had a home movie on my computer in DivX format, or xvid format, could i convert it to a file which would work on a normal DVD player, but have it retain its origonal size!?

    Thanks :)

DVD movies can be either mpeg1 or mpeg2 format but some newer dvd standalone players can play divx/xvid movies (kiss range do this) but this is not normal yet.
You can change the compression ratio or bit rate so you can increase the amount of video that a DVD disc with something like dvd shrink (this is how dvd 9 discs can be copied onto dvd 5 discs).
Check http://www.videohelp.com/dvd for some info on dvd specs.

mpeg2 is almost allways used as variable bit-rate so in theory u can cram as much onto a dvd as ur quality standards allow, but i believe using *general* dvd movie settings u get about 2 hours onto a single layer dvd which is about 5Mbit average bitrate for the video.

there are some standards u have to stick to but u can usually mix and match if ur player supports it, e.g. encode to svcd quality (svcd bitrates and resolution) mpeg2 and u can at least double the playtime for a dvd

sonic myDVD and roxio can also transcode almost any format into a normal dvd that can play on standard dvd players. recordable dvd's can store about 2 hours of video, i have had problems with sonic, nero and roxio making movies that i download that are about an hour and a half and transcoding them into a size to large to fit on a blank dvd. So I use a program that turns them into mpeg 1 and compresses them to about 65% of the original size then burn it to dvd. picture quality is still good.
