Damn, this is a hot vehicle. A WRX modded into an ATV. The site is still under development, but I can't wait to see the beast in action.

I wouldn't be that harsh, it looks like they only wasted the drivetrain to me :D

To be fair, it has a considerable weight advantage over standard but that chassis looks like it would flex somewhat, the chromed bracing looks purely cosmetic.

After seeing what's usually left of a wrc car after an accident, I wouldn't want to crash it!

The chassis is probably stronger and better braced than most cars on the road. :duh:

I'll bet that thing would be good for the Paris-Dakar. Looks like a waste of a perfectly good car to me.

It's probably ridiculously difficult to handle as well, as it's got a very large wheelbase, with big wheels and only those lil' handlebars to move them! (Unless it's got power steering.)
My guess is that it's a write-off job, and they picked the parts up for cheap. :)

Agreed. You'd be insane to do this with a "good" car.

Quite possible it was done with a written off RX or poverty pack model (all use same driveline/gearbox/engine block). They haven't used the tricked out suspension etc. All you need then is the STi brakes and rebuild the motor (aftermarket ECU) to your own specs. Still much cheaper than an STi write off i'm sure.

So are my eyes screwing with me or is that thing turned into an atv? If that thing has been turned into an atv I would not like to see it run let along race. The gravity point seems high and the steering is probly very dificult at best. ANy twitch will probly set you tumbling down the road and make you look like a hamburger. That thing could compare to the frekeshly large chopers they make here in the US that have full sized v8 350ci blocks and people ride em. To me thats just dangerus.

well said fev. It doesn't look like its intended for any practical purpose, especially not racing. Definitely more of a fun project to demonstrate the possibilities.

but just to defend my previous point...
you have to remember that the stiffness and resistence to torsion and bending is as much dependent on the shape of the structure as it is on the mass, or amount of bracing. A typical car on the road gets its strength from the bodyshell, forming a kind of monocoque rather than a tubular spaceframe. Although a roadcar may appear to have less bracing, since the structure has most of it's mass distributed a long way from the centroid (concentrated in the floorpan, roof and door pillars), its second moment of area is higher, compensating for the lack of bracing and giving reasonable stiffness.

Admittedly the front section looks fairly chunky but as a first impression, the centre section seemed very narrow, with many of the structural elements running parallel and without much cross bracing. Therefore my gut reaction was that it would twist, especially over the rough terrain it is supposedly designed for. By comparison, a wrc car will typically gain immense strength and stiffness from both the bodyshell and a substantial rollcage.

    I'm not convinced...

I was under the impression the ATV was built in New Zealand, since they said it was 'the best example of kiwi ingenuity', and the page is hosted on an aussie website.

The Subaru WRC cars are built by Prodrive, based in Banbury, England.
