some how my mbp seems to have "lost" the wired ethernet port, and has decided to call the airport interface "built-in ethernet" even after a format & reinstall of tiger... it's like the ethernet has disappeared (doesn't show in profiler either)... needless to say I'm taking it to the apple store to have it looked at fixed, but wondering if anyone had ideas of what the problem could be (or how to fix it), as I'm at a loss
Certainly a strange thing, though I've had weird networking things occur on occasion too. For some reason, my system shows two firewire and two ethernet ports, which I'm under some vague impression is related to Parallels somehow. FFS, someone find me a Mac-equivalent of Minitab and let me purge my system of evil! In any case, taking it in certainly sounds like the best bet, especially if you reinstalled. I've had some bizarre hardware problems with my first-gen MBP (same as yours, 1.83GHz CD) that they've never really managed to fully fix. I've already had it serviced twice... if anything happens again (which wouldn't at all surprise me), I'm going to try to have them just outright replace it. I'd swear that each time, it comes out worse (after the first time, not only did they completely fail to fix the original problem, but they replaced the logic board with a defective one causing my display to freak out and managed to get dusk under the screen in addition to adding in some kernel panics; only seems marginally better after having come back a second time, but that was only a few days ago) Side note - how well does that Mini perform? I'm really trying to justify one (after they get their long-overdue update, at least), but since I managed to OS X my school thinkpad, it's become far less critical.
tbh, the mini acts more as a web browser more than anything else, with occassional ms office use or iTunes. typically my gf uses it to browse the web while she's over... or use the calculator... it performs admirably as a basic all in one pc... i have it simply so she doesn't have to touch my mbp or mp as for the mbp, i brought it to the apple store, they booted from a known good drive and it grabbed airport, and recognized the onboard ethernet, but wouldn't show it in the network preferences... their proposed resolution: reinstall os x to see if that fixes it (which it probably won't as that was the 2nd thing I did)... if not, send to depot for logic board (the 3rd one) this is the 3rd repair, and the guy mentioned they might do something to remedy it... hopefully my last name will flag as special in their system considering its the 3rd logic board, and my brother works for them.. so i'll get a full on replacement or upgrade
well they tried to reinstall os x to fix it, no go, so it's off to the repair depot in texas... i think when i go pick it up from the store, i'll talk to the manager about it, maybe figure out some sort of compensation for this being the 2nd major repair since buying it, 3rd repair overall... sad, I've had it 9 months, and it's had 2 logic boards (probably the 3rd to go in for this fix), and the heatsinks replaced... i should remember not to buy rev0 products
