i'm guessing some of those are optimized for particular high load server apps, with extra possibly more secure software and whatnot, but linux in the free form is damn spectacular....

if you are worried about 100% free, open source stuff, go with debian or gentoo.

Unless you have a friend who uses Gentoo I would not recomend it to start of with it throws you in at the deep end and hopes you can swim (and btw there are sharks in there with you as well :p)

not really true anymore unless you don't RTFM or :search:
There's a great step-by-step on gentoo's site with the exact commands to use to get gentoo installed.

I love to RTFM, but when it prints out around 150 pages and doesn't work when I go step by step, it gets frustrating. (hint: get your monitor's h-sync and v-sync if you use a cheapie flatpanel & want x to work)

Back on topic, you'll find Enterprise editions of most distros cost $$$ because they include non-open source software, such as nVidia and ATI drivers and a few closed source apps. Fedora Core 3 just came out and is supposed to be a great alternative to Red Hat.

If you want ease of use, just download the first 3 CDs of Mandrake 10.

Very true I know I have just installed it. Try getting GCC-3.4 running with Oo_O. Or stop gdesklets from crashing all the time. You may be able to install it but whether it runs well is another matter.

My recomendation is ubuntu its based on Debian but is very up to date and ap-get is fairly good.

Apt-get is pants compared to Portage. If you can handle a debian based system then you can easily handle Gentoo...
