I don't have any pics of this thing yet, sorry. Anyways, I was searching around for a GameBoy Advance emulator last night and stumbled across drivers for an X-Box controller. Knowing that the controllers essentially are USB, I figured I could hack the end off the controller and attach a USB plug to it. So I set about cutting off the end of both cables and comparing wires. For the most part everything matches up, even color coded the same. The only difference is that the X-Box wire has a small yellow wire that's not present in the USB cable. My guess is that this wire is to tell the X-Box that it's connected or for telling it when the trip splitter gets disconnected. (since the X-Box pauses itself when that happens.) Anyways, after a few minutes of cutting, stripping, and soldering I got it all cleaned up and plugged it in. Of course, it didn't work. Opening my tape job back up I noticed that the data wires had broken. Which is where my first warning comes in... The data wires are really really small. If you are going to do this mod, be very careful with them. (The Power and Ground wires are bigger and aren't quite as delicate.) Okay, second try. I plugged my soldering iron back in and this time, I melted the coating off the wires instead of stripping it with my knife. This seemed to keep the wires in much better condition. Once again, I had everything soldered and taped up so I plugged it in. Success! I get a little message in the corner.. "New Hardware Found: X-Box Controller" The only trick is... I haven't installed the drivers yet! How does it know it's an X-Box controller... Anyways, I installed the drivers and I was in the money. Now it's time for a little NHL 2003
NO ****! that the funniest thing ive heard all night, lets hear it for microsoft’s frightening commitment to detail, plz post the link to the drivers
Here are the two sets of drivers that I found. I'm running the first set, which seems to work great. Haven't tried the second, so I don't know what they're like. www.grooveyardfunk.com/ codeunderground.com/
lol dude, microsoft works in weird ways..... Of course this could be really really useful in a PC-in-an-XBOX-case mod
What i'm surprised is that everyone is trying to put make the Xbox act as a pc by installing Linux or Windows , but everyone should try and figure out how to make the PC act like a Xbox so we can start playin Xbox games on the PC!!!
Here's two pics. I didn't take any in progress things, oh well. I'm just gonna link to them so I don't kill people with gigantic pics. controller.jpg wires.jpg I didn't have any heatshrink around when I was doin this, so I taped her up. Looks kinda pooey, but it doesn't bother me too much.
Well done. Although aren't X-Box controllers essential a newer version of MS PC Sidewinder controllers?
No doubt if this idea gets around the Internet a lot then MS will release a PC version of the controller costing a vast amount of money.
No idea, but that might explain why it new what they were.. I don't know. I thought about that, but I don't have an X-Box and don't plan on getting one. I can still switch it back to that though, I cut the plug off after the trip splitter, so all I need is a new end for the cable and it's hot swappable.
How about getting one of them joypad exentsion cables and modding one end of that and leaving the controller in normal condition ? Then u can just swap all day long But howcome windows regognised it as an "X-Box Controller" hum.
