Ugh, that's great Microsoft is trying to create their own powerhouse search engine, but why the "bing" name?
This was news at about 10am this morning, Although, i must say, it is an interesting move. While watching the new's the it analasyst said it was a good thing for google, however, my mum was trying to talk to me at the same time so i missed what he said. Sam
I know some one who works for bing. the lolz around the office. B.I.N.G. has a meaning you know.... But It's Not Google
It was formerly Live Search, which really wasn't terribly memorable I guess. No doubt MS ran several names, including this one, by a number of focus panels before selecting it. <giggles>
No-one cared when it was called MSN. No-one cared when it was called Live Search. I still don't care now its called Bing. The first thing I do when I set up my browser, on any and every PC I log on to (bear in mind I remote onto servers and often use the internet from them in my daily job as well) I hit customise search providers, add Google and delete BING/Live Search/MSN/who cares. It doesn't matter to me that it might be better, it just won't get a chance because I, like many other people, have learned how to get the results I need from Google, which is a challenge in itself, and like the results it gives. I seriously doubt I'm the only one who feels that way about it Microsoft will have a tough time throwing off Google no matter WHAT they do because of these reasons.
BS... absolute BS. Between Microsoft and Yahoo, they had (last i checked) ~27% of the global search market. If anyone here has anything resembling a dominant market share, it would HAVE to be google, commanding just around 70% in February this year. Microsoft has a dominant share in the OS market, no arguing there. Probably even in the Office application market. However, the search world belongs to google. I just love the way that whenever MS says something about either open source or search entries, some google rep jumps up and down, going "Illegal monopoly ZOMGBBQSAUCE!!!11Shift+1"
I like Bing's map service better than Google Maps now, bird's eye view is pretty cool. It's not like anything short of a calamitous explosion of Google's servers will get me to stop using it. :-|
wow the bird's eye view is amazing indeed ! their satellite view is very old however. At least 3 years old as I haven't had 'that car' in my driver since 2006
The point is that "Monopoly" gets judged on certain sectors on the market. OS, Browsers, Office Apps are three different sectors. Just because there's a lions share in one, doesn't mean there's a lion's share in the other. Ever wonder why there's a Win 7 E edition (which comes without IE installed, therefore without control about what search gets used?) MS wants to break into the search market, and be competitive there. That should by all accounts be considered a GOOD thing, as competition is always good. Google has a firm stranglehold on the search market, and someone that's big enough to actually hold somewhat of a "Veto" there would be most welcome. Same as when Firefox started taking share from IE... good thing, as it pushed IE into a more standards-driven version, which brings a "Same web for all" world closer...
I think Ballmer put it pretty well: Ergo - no monopoly. 2 Companies working together, MS taking most of the financial risks here. Long term plan to cooperate, as both of them know they've had it otherwise.
