which is the better for use with the following system? pentium d 920 @ 3.73ghz - stock cooler abit lg-81 2gb pqi turbo memory @ 667mhz 4-4-4-12 onboard 8mb intel gma950 160gb maxtor sata2 hdd 400w jeantech psu All this is housed in a aspire x-qpack. If needs be i could replace the psu, but is it really neccesary (was enough to power a 6600gt)
although close, the x1800xt beats the 7900gt. get the 512mb version. unless youre adding extreme cooling and voltmodding. edit: also ati IQ is better at the moment, and they have nifty technological leads such as HDR+AA edit(2): the x1800xt MIGHT eat your power supply up though
X1800XT stock will be a better option than the 7900GT. If you're wanting to overclock, you'll get MUCH bigger gains from the 7900 than you will the X1800. The 7900 will also run cooler and draw less from your PSU. It's swings and roundabouts really. If you're planning on going multi GPU at some point in the future the ATI is probably the best bet, Nvidia + multi GPU + Intel don't really mix too well... Also, PSU wise you might well struggle "jeantech" arent usually regarded as high quality PSU makers... 6600GT draws a LOT less than the 7900 will and the X1800 draws even more than the GT...
I think i will change the PSU now, so no problem there. However is the 7900gt worth the extra £50? With it being cooler I guess that will be better in a matx case.
