Hello I have a ATI X1900XT and I bought a Zalman VF900 cooler. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ShowI...+LED+2+Ball+VGA+Cooling+Fan/Heatsink+-+Retail The problem is, The molex on the X1900XT's fan is different than the Zalman's molex and the Zalman has a speed controller. Can I simply, Get rid of the speed controller, Solder the stock ATI fan molex onto the Zalman fan, So I can plug it directly into the X1900XT? Safely? (I would use ATI tool to control the fan speed)
Yes, as long as you match up the ground power, and I would assume the tach signals correctly to your card it should work out just fine. Just pay attention to the wattage ratings on both the stock fan and the replacement. This is important due to the switching power of the fan controller built onto the card. Though I have done some pretty extreme wiring on my cards. Such as my 9600se and a mx440 which are in my sig. I have to say that each is unique.
Thanks for the help! Will "ATI tool" override the fan controller built into the card? I like the projects in your sig Did you put a frame on the wall mounted LCD?
I really wish I could answer your question about ATI Tool. I personally have never used it to adjust my fan speeds. My 9600se uses its own independant temperature based controller. And my mx440 draws power directly from the AGP slot's 12v power. As for the LCD on the wall. No I have not yet found a suitable frame for it. Something wooden or black may be totally out of place with the walls. Yet something white would look a bit silly as well. I like the metal look. So I may see if I can built a nice frame for it out of some aluminum. Either brushed or aluminum or polished.
I matched up the colors and soldered them together, Everything seems to be working fine I also used ATI tool to turn the fan to 100% and my temps are the same as before. For your LCD, I think a plain or non-fancy picture frame, stained to match your desk would look nice, You could also paint or sleeve the cables to match the wall.
Yea, the way I have it now is only temporary. I have not had the time or materials to really do anything with it. I would like to sleeve the cables so they look a little less messy. Thanks for the input.
did you just put the wires into the original fans plug? i was interested in doing something like this as the fanmate is a pain, and the wires look a mess.
Warrior_Rocker, Make sure you give us some pics when you finish the job M4RTIN, I cut the ATI fan molex connector off of the stock fan, leaving about 1" wires to work with, Then I cut the Zalman fan wires just long enough to plug into the graphics card, Matched up the colors on the ATI molex wires and the Zalman fan wires, Then soldered them together. I also used heat-shrink tubing on the individual wires. The wires on the ATI molex are in a different order than the Zalman molex, So I was a little worried it was going to explode when I turned on my PC But everything is working fine Good Luck!
Can you throw up a few pics of your work. Just so we can all get a visual of what you have done. I would also like to see just for future reference, should I ever be in the situation.
