It is in Russian mind you, but the charts are pretty self-explanatory. Covers ATI cards from X800XTPE down to the 9600Pro, and Nvidia cards from the 6800 Ultra down to the 5700. They also include overclocked power consumption for all the cards. Interestingly enough, the 6800 Ultra needs less power than the 5950, and the 6800GT needs 8W less than the X800XTPE.

Yeah, it is a very good article. Another interesting thing: at idle, the 9800XT consumes 38W(!) , the 6800Ultra 29W, and the X800XTPE only 18W.

That is indeed very interesting. The 6800GT that I am eyeing up actually uses less power than my 9800pro at idle (I assume this would be 2d usage).

Nice for a rough idea, but i have doubts over the accuracy really since it's in another language.

The article is by Tim Tscheblockov of Xbitlabs. He also did an article on the power consumption of ATI cards for Xbit, but the one at overclockers.ru includes the Nvidia cards as well.

so, if I read this right, my 5950 at 500/1000 (Golden Sample) actually only takes about 2.3W MORE than a 6800Ultra?

Then I guess my TrueControl550 will do me just fine in my next build, providing the motherboard and chipset don't hog more Wattage.

Consult data sheets on manufacturers websites.

I'd put an ammeter on the power wire to the card (clamp-type current probes are ideal to keep the warranty), and measure the current at idle, then start Fear Factor, then measure the current again.

it would be interesting to see what load is removed when the VC are watercooled?

The Fans have to have some wattage associated with them. Even if its only 2W.
